Custom POS software development
Appfront builds custom point-of-sale (POS) software for retail, hospitality, specialist shops and chains: from checkout and receipts to product and price management, real-time stock, payment integration with PIN, iDEAL and PSPs, discounts and loyalty cards, multiple tills and branches, end-of-day closing and reporting. Includes an offline mode that keeps working when the internet drops out, and integration with your accounting and webshop for true omnichannel. A till system that fits your range and way of working, rather than the other way around.
What is point-of-sale software?
Point-of-sale software, also known as POS software, is the system you use to take payment at the counter or at the table. It processes items and prices, calculates discounts and VAT, prints or emails the receipt, controls the payment terminal and records every sale directly against your stock. A good POS system connects the shop floor with your product management, stock, reporting and accounts, so you know at all times what has sold and what is still in stock.
Off-the-shelf packages often force your way of working into a fixed mould. A specialist shop with made-to-order or seasonal items, a hospitality business with table management, and a chain with dozens of branches each have very different requirements for pricing rules, discounts, stock and reporting. Custom point-of-sale software is built around your range, sector and branch structure rather than the other way round, and can grow with you as you expand, add a webshop or support new payment methods. That avoids spreadsheets alongside the till and keeps your sales figures complete and reliable.
Because you work with payment and customer data every day, we build security in from the architecture up: payments via certified providers and customer data handled in line with the GDPR. Also read more about our broader approach to custom software and custom software development.
Fast and error-free checkout
A clear till screen that lets your staff complete a sale in a few taps. The card terminal is controlled automatically with the correct amount, which keeps queues short and prevents keying errors.
Real-time insight across all your tills and branches
Every sale updates stock and reporting straight away. You manage products and prices centrally, and see takings and stock in real time per till, per location and across the whole chain.
Keeps working, even without internet
If the connection drops, the till keeps taking payments and printing receipts locally. Once the network is back, transactions sync automatically, so revenue and stock figures are accurate again.
How we build your till software
We work step by step and involve your shop or hospitality team early on. From a thorough review of your range, pricing rules, payment methods and branch layout through to going live and ongoing support, every step is aimed at a till system your staff understand, trust and can use without fuss during the busiest moments.
We map out your checkout process: range and pricing structure, discounts and promotions, payment methods, stock, the number of tills and branches, and the integrations with accounting and webshop. Together we determine what matters most.
We design a fast, clear till screen and the architecture underneath: product management, stock model, payment integration, the offline mode, and how receipts, VAT and end-of-day closings are recorded.
We build in short iterations with automated testing and monitoring. You test along the way on a real till setup with a card terminal and receipt printer, and help set priorities and how well it fits your day-to-day work.
A controlled rollout per location with data validation and a safety net, followed by ongoing management, monitoring and further development as you grow, open new branches or add extra sales channels.
What till software actually does
We tailor every till to your range, sector and branch layout. Below are the features we most often deliver for retailers, hospitality businesses, specialist shops and chains.
Checkout & receipts
Fast checkout with a clear till screen, followed by a correct receipt that you can print or email. The receipt shows items, prices, discounts and VAT, broken down by rate. Returns, corrections and gift vouchers are recorded properly.
Product & price management
Manage your range, prices, variants and barcodes centrally, and push changes to all tills in one go. Work with price categories, volume tiers and time-limited promotions, and keep control of margins and VAT rates per product.
Real-time stock
Every sale is deducted from stock immediately, so you can see what is on hand in real time, per location and across the whole chain. With minimum stock levels, reorder suggestions and purchase recording, you avoid lost sales and unnecessary overstock.
Payments: card, iDEAL & PSP
The till connects directly to the payment terminal for PIN and contactless payments, and links to a payment service provider for iDEAL and online payments. Cash, split payments and tips are supported, with payment traffic handled by PCI DSS-certified parties.
Discounts & customer card
Promotions, bundles and discount rules applied automatically at the till. With a customer card or loyalty scheme, you recognise returning customers, collect points and send targeted offers, with customer data handled in line with GDPR.
End-of-day closing & reporting
Close the day or the till with a balanced count, VAT overview and cash discrepancies. Management information on revenue, margins, bestsellers and peak hours helps you make purchasing and sales decisions, with automatic posting to your accounts.
Who we build point-of-sale software for
Checkout looks different in every sector. For each type of business we build point-of-sale software that suits the range of products, the pace at the till, and the way stock and channels come together.
Retail & shops
Shops with a broad range, barcodes and changing promotions. Fast checkout, real-time stock and clear reporting are central, with a customer card to reward returning customers.
Hospitality
Cafés, restaurants and lunch rooms with table management, rounds, split payments and tips. For those who also take bookings, we connect to reservation software for a seamless guest experience.
Specialist shops
Bakers, butchers, cheese shops and other specialist retailers with fresh produce, scale integration and weight-based pricing. The till accounts for different units, VAT rates and fresh stock.
Chains & multi-branch businesses
Chains with multiple outlets that manage products, prices and promotions centrally, while allowing variation per branch. You see stock, revenue and end-of-day closings per outlet and across the whole chain, with a CRM integration for customer data across all branches.

We build on a modern, maintainable web stack and connect the till to the systems you already use. For omnichannel, we link shop and webshop so products, prices, stock and customer data are shared across channels, and you only sell each item once. For the financial side, we integrate with your accounting so revenue, VAT and end-of-day closings are posted automatically. Want the till to be part of a broader platform? Why choose Appfront for your point-of-sale software?
Appfront builds custom software and always starts with a thorough analysis of your range, pricing rules, payment methods and branch structure. A point-of-sale system must not only work technically, but above all work at the busiest moments, when there is a queue and no time to think about a menu.
We build a fast, clear till screen and write clear documentation, so your own team or a future supplier can understand and manage the software. No black box, but transparent code and clear agreements on integrations, access control and management, so you are not tied to a single supplier.
You work with a dedicated point of contact who understands both the technical side and the realities of retail and hospitality. This keeps lines of communication short, prevents misunderstandings and speeds up decisions when choices need to be made during the build, for example about discount rules or a new payment method.

Security and privacy in till software
At the till you handle payment and customer data every day, and we treat that with great care. Payment processing runs through PCI DSS-certified payment providers, so card details never end up unprotected in your till system. The card terminal is controlled directly and transactions are handled in line with PSD2. For the customer card and loyalty schemes, we process personal data in accordance with the GDPR, with data minimisation, role-based access and logging of who views which data.
We record transactions, receipts and end-of-day closures and retain them in line with the statutory retention requirements for your records, so your sales administration remains complete and verifiable for the Dutch tax authorities and your accountant. Frequently asked questions about till software
Answers to the questions we are asked most often about custom till software and POS systems.
Point-of-sale software, also known as POS software, is the system you use to take payment at the counter or table. It handles items and prices, calculates discounts and VAT, prints or emails the receipt, controls the payment terminal and records the sale against your stock. A good POS system connects the shop floor to your product management, inventory, reporting and accounting, so you always know what has been sold and what is in stock. Custom POS software lets you set this up around your own range, sector and way of working, rather than adapting your processes to a standard package.
We build custom solutions. A specialist shop with standardised products, a hospitality business with table management and a chain with dozens of branches all have very different requirements for a till system. Custom till software is matched to your range, pricing structure, discount rules and branch setup, and can grow with you if you expand or add a webshop. After an initial consultation, we agree together which functionality matters most and in what order to develop it, without promising a fixed timeline or price we cannot yet substantiate.
We integrate the till with the payment methods your customers use: card and contactless payments via a payment terminal, iDEAL and online payments via a payment service provider (PSP) such as Mollie, Adyen or Stripe, and of course cash. The payment terminal is controlled directly, so the amount appears automatically on screen and typing errors are avoided. Card details never reach the till unencrypted; payment traffic runs through PCI DSS-certified parties and in line with PSD2.
Yes. A till must keep working even if the internet or the central server goes down. We build an offline mode in which the till continues to work locally: you can take payments, print receipts and update stock. Once the connection is restored, the till automatically synchronises transactions with the central system, so revenue, stock and reporting are correct again. How robust the offline mode needs to be depends on your situation and the number of tills, which we determine together with you.
Yes. We integrate the till with your accounting package, for example Exact Online, Twinfield or Moneybird, so that revenue, VAT and end-of-day closings are posted automatically. For omnichannel, we connect the till to your webshop, such as WooCommerce, Shopify or Magento, so that items, prices, stock and customer data are shared between the shop and the webshop. That way you sell the same item only once and stock remains up to date across all channels.
The receipt shows the items sold, the prices, any discounts applied and the VAT, split by the standard and reduced rates where applicable. Transactions, receipts and daily closings are recorded and retained in line with the statutory retention requirement for your records, so that your sales administration remains complete and verifiable for HM Revenue & Customs and your accountant. We agree the set-up of VAT rates, returns and corrections with you and your accountant.
Yes. We build till software that grows with you from a single till to multiple tills per site and multiple branches. You manage products, prices and discount rules centrally and roll them out to all sites, while you can set different prices or promotions per branch. You see stock, turnover and daily closings in real time per till and per site, with consolidated reporting for the chain as a whole.
Payment traffic runs through PCI DSS-certified payment providers, so card details never end up unprotected in your till system. We process customer data for loyalty cards and reward schemes in line with the UK GDPR, with data minimisation, role-based access and logging of who views which data. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and we work to OWASP security standards with automated testing and monitoring.
