REST API OAuth2 ERP, PSA, HR & PEPPOL

Custom Visma integration development

Appfront connects the full Visma product family to your webshop, CRM, time tracking, HR system or internal dashboard. Visma.net Financials, Visma Severa, AccountView, Visma Talent and Visma Connect IXP for PEPPOL, with proper OAuth2 implementations, idempotent bookings and EU data residency.

What is Visma?

Visma is a Norwegian software group and one of Europe's largest suppliers of business software for accountancy, ERP, HR and payroll. The group serves hundreds of thousands of companies across the Benelux and Scandinavia, and its product family covers several points in the administration stack.

For Dutch businesses, the most relevant products are: Visma.net Financials for cloud accounting and ERP, Visma.net Project Management for project-based invoicing, Visma Severa as a PSA platform for consultancies and agencies, AccountView for the Dutch mid-market and accountancy firms that host it, Visma Talent (the Tedder and Talentech brands) for HR suites and recruitment, and Visma Connect IXP as a PEPPOL Access Point for structured e-invoicing.

Each product line has its own API with its own authentication flow and data model. That is why every Visma integration starts with the question: which Visma product does the client use exactly, and which endpoints will we touch? Documentation is publicly available via the Visma Developer Portal, per product line.

Visma.net Financials & Project

Cloud ERP and accounting for mid-sized businesses, with a separate Project Management module for project-based purchasing and invoicing. REST API with OAuth2, granular per resource (Customer, Invoice, JournalTransaction, ProjectTask).

Visma Severa

PSA platform for consultancies, agencies and project organisations: time tracking, projects, resource planning and invoice triggers based on project status. Public REST API with OAuth2 and webhook subscriptions for real-time sync.

AccountView

Visma's Dutch mid-market product, available on-premises or hosted, strong among accountancy firms and in construction, manufacturing and wholesale. Traditionally accessed via an XML API, and increasingly via Visma Connect IXP for e-invoicing and PEPPOL.

Visma Talent & Visma Connect IXP

Talent brings together Tedder and Talentech: ATS, onboarding, performance and HR master data. Visma Connect IXP is the PEPPOL Access Point for B2B and B2G e-invoicing. Both are separate REST APIs built on a shared OAuth2 stack.

How we build your Visma integration

A Visma integration only works if the accounting, HR or project context is right. Our approach combines an API workstream with a short domain intake with your bookkeeper, controller or HR manager.

1

Product inventory

We identify which Visma product you use: Financials, Severa, AccountView, Talent or a combination. Which modules and endpoints are affected, which authorisation roles are required, and which administration or company IDs apply. Result: an API scope document per interface.

2

App registration & OAuth2

Registration in the Visma Developer Portal, choosing the OAuth2 flow (client credentials, authorisation code with PKCE or hybrid), requesting scopes and connecting a sandbox tenant. Token caching with automatic refresh, and webhook subscriptions where the product supports them.

3

Mapping & sync logic

Connecting your source system (webshop, CRM, time tracking, ATS) to Visma. Which invoice lines go to which ledger account, how we match debtors, how we handle VAT-exempt transactions, multi-entity routing and cost centres. Idempotency keys per logical action.

4

Production, monitoring & App Store

Going live on a production tenant, monitoring API errors, daily reconciliation reports and a runbook for the most common failure scenarios. For distribution via the Visma App Store, we handle the listing, screenshots and partner review.

Which Visma integrations do we build?

Most Visma integrations fall into six categories: invoices out, payments in, time registration to PSA, HR and payroll data, project and cost price data for reporting, and structured B2B documents via PEPPOL.

Invoice sync from your own webshop

A webshop order automatically becomes a sales invoice in Visma.net Financials or AccountView, with the correct general ledger account per product category and VAT rate per line. Includes returns, credit notes and mapping to your chart of accounts.

Timesheet app to Severa integration

Approved hours from a time-tracking app (in-house tooling, Toggl, Harvest or Clockify) are periodically converted into project invoices in Visma Severa, with the correct rate tiers per employee, project and activity. Webhook-triggered invoice drafting.

HR app sync to Visma Talent

Vacancies, candidates, applications and onboarding flows are synchronised between your own recruitment portal and Visma Talent (Tedder, Talentech). Includes HR master data such as employees, contracts and organisational structure, routed to payroll providers.

Cost-price data for custom reports

Export project cost prices, time spent and revenue per cost object from Visma.net Financials or Severa to your data warehouse (BigQuery, Snowflake) for custom margin and utilisation reporting, separate from the standard Visma reports.

Multi-entity consolidation

Holdings with multiple BVs or foreign entities on Visma.net Financials, Severa or AccountView that want intercompany postings, central reporting or a single-source debtors file. Per-tenant routing based on company ID and organisational rules.

PEPPOL B2B invoices via Visma Connect IXP

Sending and receiving structured e-invoices, e-orders and delivery notes over the PEPPOL network via Visma Connect IXP as your Access Point. UBL payload, SBDH envelope and automatic routing to your accounting system without a PDF intermediate step.

Which businesses do we work with Visma for?

Visma's largest base in the Netherlands is among SMEs and mid-sized businesses professionalising their administration without wanting Exact or SAP, and among accountancy and consultancy firms with PSA requirements.

Accountancy and controller services

Accountancy firms that host their clients on AccountView or Visma.net Financials and want to connect a central portal or intake tool to client administrations. Including PEPPOL handling via Visma Connect IXP across the entire client portfolio.

Consultancies and agencies (PSA)

Advisory firms, design agencies and software consultancies running on Visma Severa for project administration, time tracking and resource planning. Often integrated with Slack, Google Calendar, Jira or a custom client portal.

E-commerce and D2C brands

Webshops handling dozens to thousands of orders a day that no longer want to key them into the books manually. Often involves returns, subscriptions or multiple webshop locations (Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, Lightspeed) and payments via Mollie, Stripe or Adyen.

HR and recruitment organisations

Companies using Visma Talent (Tedder or Talentech) for ATS, onboarding and performance that want to connect their own candidate portal or careers site, or route HR master data to payroll providers (Nmbrs, Loket, or an in-house payroll engine).

SaaS and subscription businesses

Monthly or annual recurring billing via Stripe, Chargebee or an in-house billing engine that must land cleanly in Visma.net, including MRR breakdown per cohort and correct VAT treatment per country (B2B, B2C, intra-community).

Multi-entity holdings

Businesses with multiple Dutch BVs or foreign entities on Visma.net that need central reporting, intercompany processing and consistent debtor and creditor master data across the tenants.

Our technical approach

Visma's APIs are well documented, but authentication, pagination, throttling and webhook support differ from one product to another. We respect those differences rather than building a one-size-fits-all integration.

OAuth2 tokens expire after an hour, so we cache tokens server-side and refresh them automatically before they lapse, rotating refresh tokens cleanly so no session is lost. Rate limits vary by Visma product, so we build exponential backoff with jitter and read the remaining quota from the response headers. For batch operations, we split requests into chunks to stay within the limits without inflating processing times. For multi-tenant SaaS applications on the Visma App Store, we register the refresh token and company ID for each customer tenant and isolate API calls per tenant with scoped access.

For financial integrations, idempotency is crucial: if a network error triggers a retry, the same invoice must not be booked twice. We use an idempotency key per logical action and maintain an audit table of all API calls, with request, response, scope and result. Every production integration runs a daily reconciliation job: number of invoices in the source system versus number in Visma, with an alert on any discrepancy. For PEPPOL flows via Visma Connect IXP, we validate the UBL payload against the Peppol BIS Billing 3 and SI-UBL specifications before sending.

Why choose Appfront for your Visma project?

A Visma integration either works or it doesn't; there is no middle ground as there is with a marketing tool. Visma versus Exact, AFAS, Twinfield and Moneybird

In the Netherlands, Visma mainly competes with Exact Online, AFAS, Twinfield and Moneybird. The right choice depends on scale, international activity and which further modules you need to cover.

Exact Online is the market leader among Dutch SMEs. Its REST API is very mature, accountant integrations are widely available and its add-on ecosystem is large. Exact is stronger for pure Dutch bookkeeping, while Visma is stronger in multi-entity setups and has better access points for PSA via Severa and HR via Talent.

AFAS is Netherlands-only and vertically integrated: ERP, HR and payroll on one platform. It is a closed ecosystem with its own GetConnector and UpdateConnector APIs, not REST in the modern sense. For customers who want everything from one supplier, AFAS is strong; for customers who prefer to combine best-of-breed tools, Visma is more flexible.

Twinfield (from Wolters Kluwer) is an older product with a SOAP stack, still mostly used by accountancy firms running legacy installations. It works well enough, but from a developer's perspective it feels like a product from the 2010s.

Moneybird targets freelancers and small businesses. Its REST API is very clean and a pleasure to build against, but Moneybird is not designed for the mid-market: no multi-entity support, limited project and cost-centre functionality, and no HR or payroll. For scale-ups outgrowing Moneybird, Visma is a natural next step.

We build integrations for all five. For a new client on Visma, we often advise: choose a mid-market ERP if you have serious multi-entity or international ambitions, choose AccountView if your accountancy firm hosts it for you, and choose Severa if PSA is central to your business. We also have dedicated integration pages for AccountView if that is your exact product.

  • Comparison: Visma.net Financials versus Exact Online
  • Comparison: AccountView versus Twinfield (legacy SOAP)
  • Visma Severa versus standalone PSA tools (Productive, Moco, Toggl Plan)
  • Visma Talent versus standalone ATS (Homerun, Bullhorn, Recruitee)
  • Migrating from Moneybird or Exact to Visma.net
  • Multi-entity setups in Visma.net Financials
  • Two-hour selection advice based on your processes
  • Implementation support for a new accounting setup

Frequently asked questions about Visma integrations

Visma is a Scandinavian software group with a broad portfolio. We connect Visma.net Financials (cloud ERP and accounting for mid-sized businesses), Visma.net Project Management, Visma Severa (PSA for consultancies and agencies), AccountView (Dutch mid-market accounting and ERP, on-premises and hosted), Visma Talent, formerly Tedder and Talentech (HR, recruitment, onboarding and performance), and Visma Connect IXP for PEPPOL e-invoicing and e-ordering. Which API and authentication flow we use depends on the Visma product.

Visma.net Financials has a REST API with OAuth2 (authorisation code for user context, client credentials for server-to-server). Visma Severa has a public REST API with OAuth2 and webhook subscriptions. AccountView traditionally works via an XML API and increasingly via Visma Connect IXP for e-invoicing. Visma Talent (Tedder, Talentech) has a REST API with OAuth2 for HR data, vacancies and candidates. Visma Connect IXP is a PEPPOL Access Point with REST and SBDH payloads for structured B2B documents.

Visma is a Norwegian parent company with EU residency for its cloud products. Visma.net, Visma Severa and Visma Talent run in European data centres (often Ireland, Sweden or the Netherlands) under data processing agreements compliant with the GDPR. For customers with strict data sovereignty requirements, such as government or healthcare, configurations with EU-only storage are available. As part of the implementation, we arrange the DPA, sub-processor lists and data mapping for your record of processing activities.

Visma has an App Store (also known as the Visma App Center) where partner applications are offered to end customers. For public distribution, you register the app as a developer partner in the Visma Developer Portal, go through a review of security, OAuth implementation and user experience, and then publish the listing. End customers can activate the integration from the App Store with OAuth consent. For private integrations, the App Store is not needed: the OAuth client then stays linked to a specific customer tenant.

Visma Connect IXP is Visma's PEPPOL Access Point, which lets you send and receive structured electronic invoices, orders and delivery notes via the PEPPOL network. PEPPOL is the standard for B2B and B2G across Europe, and has been mandatory for suppliers to the Dutch central government since 2017. For commercial B2B it is increasingly requested by procurement organisations, and it becomes legally mandatory for VAT reporting in the EU in 2028 (ViDA Directive). With IXP you can be reached via PEPPOL without having to host an Access Point yourself.

Yes. Visma.net and Visma Severa are multi-tenant SaaS platforms in which each customer has its own tenant. For SaaS applications serving multiple Visma customers, we register a public OAuth app, store the refresh token and company ID per customer tenant, and isolate API calls per tenant with scoped access. Multi-entity setups within a customer (a holding with several BVs) are handled with a company selector in the UI or automatic routing based on debtor mapping.

In the Netherlands, Exact Online is the market leader among SMEs, with the broadest accountant integration and a very mature REST API. AFAS is Netherlands-only and vertically integrated (ERP, HR and payroll in one platform), with a closed ecosystem and its own GetConnector API. Twinfield (from Wolters Kluwer) is an older product with a SOAP stack and is mainly still used by accountancy firms. Moneybird targets freelancers and small businesses with a clean, simple REST API but is not intended for the mid-market. Visma fills the gap between Exact and AFAS: more Scandinavian DNA and multi-entity support, and also strong in PSA via Severa and HR via Talent.

Visma.net Financials uses OAuth2 with the Visma Developer Portal as the authorisation server. For server-to-server integrations, client credentials are suitable. For integrations where an end user connects their own Visma account, use the authorisation code flow with PKCE. Tokens have a lifetime of one hour; refresh tokens remain valid for longer but must be stored with rotation. We implement a token cache with automatic refresh, scope-aware throttling per endpoint and webhook subscriptions for near-real-time updates.
