Custom TomTom API integration development

Appfront builds custom TomTom integrations for fleet, field service, delivery and logistics: Maps SDK for web and mobile, Routing with truck restrictions, Geocoding and Search, real-time Traffic and EV Charging. A European alternative to Google Maps with better commercial terms and strong logistics features.

What is a TomTom API integration?

TomTom is the Dutch location technology company from Amsterdam best known for its navigation devices, but it also offers a mature API suite for developers. With a TomTom API integration, your application uses individual services such as map display, address search, route planning and traffic data.

A good integration combines these services sensibly: an online shop geocodes customer addresses and shows the nearest collection point on a map, a field service app plans routes with real-time traffic for the engineer, and a delivery platform optimises multiple stops with Waypoint Optimisation. We build this with the right mix of server-side API calls (for caching and security) and the client-side SDK (for an interactive map experience).

Map display with the Maps SDK

Raster or vector map tiles embedded via the Maps SDK for Web (built on MapLibre GL), Android or iOS. With custom styling in your brand colours, markers, polygons and interactive elements.

Routing and Matrix Routing

Optimal routes between points, including real-time traffic and vehicle type options. Matrix Routing for all combinations (useful for "nearest X" queries) and Waypoint Optimisation for multi-stop planning.

Geocoding, Search and Traffic

Address validation, type-ahead search for streets and points of interest, and real-time traffic for live ETAs. For logistics and delivery, the foundation beneath any planning.

How we build your TomTom integration

Location integrations seem simple until you encounter rate limits, key security, tile caching and real-time traffic updates. Our approach runs in four phases with clear delivery milestones.

1

Use case and service selection

We map out which services you need (Maps, Routing, Geocoding, EV Charging, Traffic), the volumes you expect, and whether your primary audience is web or mobile. Outcome: a services mapping plus estimated API costs.

2

Architecture and key strategy

API keys are split by environment and by service. We restrict client-side keys to specific referrers and store server-side keys in a secret manager. For frequently repeated calls, we design a caching layer.

3

Build and test

Front-end integration via the Maps SDK with custom styling, back-end calls for Geocoding and Routing with retry logic and a circuit breaker. Native mobile integration via the Android or iOS SDK. End-to-end tests with realistic test data.

4

Go-live and monitoring

Dashboards covering API call volume, rate-limit consumption, latency per service and error rate. Alerts for unusual patterns that could indicate a faulty implementation or a leaked key.

What can a TomTom integration do for you?

The TomTom API suite is broad. A good integration combines services per use case without making your application unnecessarily complex.

Custom styled maps

Maps in your own brand colours via the Maps SDK, with interactive markers, clustered pins for large datasets and polygons for service areas or postcode zones.

Routing with truck restrictions

The Logistics API takes into account weight, axle load, width, height and dangerous-goods category. Essential for fleet applications that cannot use every street.

Matrix Routing for "nearest X"

Calculate all distances between multiple starting points and destinations in a single call. Ideal for queries such as "show the five nearest engineers to this job".

Waypoint Optimisation

For multiple stops, TomTom determines the optimal order based on distance, traffic and departure time. This saves your field team time and fuel.

Real-time Traffic

Traffic Incidents and Traffic Flow as a map overlay and as input for ETA calculations. Essential for delivery ETAs and disruption alerts.

EV Charging Stations & EV Routing

For apps around electric driving and fleet electrification: live data on charging points, plus routes that plan charging stops based on battery capacity and consumption.

Which sectors do we work with TomTom for?

TomTom integrations come up in a number of recurring sectors, each with its own requirements for data quality and functionality.

Fleet management and haulage companies

Lorry routing with vehicle restrictions, real-time traffic rerouting when disruptions occur, and trip logging via the Logistics API. EU data residency is often a firm requirement for haulage companies.

Field service and installation companies

Daily scheduling for engineers with Waypoint Optimisation, a native mobile app via the iOS/Android SDK, and customer tracking with live ETAs.

Delivery and e-commerce

Pickup point finders with geocoding, delivery routes with real-time Matrix Routing, and postcode validation during checkout. Can be connected to Shopify, WooCommerce or custom commerce platforms.

Travel, property and location apps

Interactive maps for property seekers or travellers, with POI search, route planning and location-based filtering. Often combined with your own POI database via the Search API.

Our technical approach

A TomTom integration at scale requires careful attention to key security, caching and rate-limit management. We build all three from day one.

We restrict client-side API keys to specific domain referrers within the TomTom Developer Portal, so a leaked key cannot be misused elsewhere. Server-side keys for Routing and Geocoding are stored in a secret manager (AWS Secrets Manager, Vault) with rotation. For geocoding calls we build a Redis cache: typeahead results for common searches (such as postcodes) need not hit the TomTom API every time.

We actively monitor rate limits: alerts at 80% consumption, and automatic fallback to cached data when throttled. We load the Maps SDK lazily (only on pages that display maps) to keep the front-end bundle small.

Why choose Appfront for your TomTom integration?

A TomTom integration is only production-ready once keys are secure, quotas scale properly and the SDK loads efficiently. We build for all those dimensions from the very first day.

  • Maps SDK implementation with brand styling
  • Separation of server-side and client-side keys
  • Geocoding cache via Redis for cost control
  • Routing with lorry and EV restrictions
  • Matrix Routing for "nearest" logic
  • Lazy-loaded SDK for front-end performance
  • Monitoring of quotas, latency and error rates

Security and compliance

Location data is often personal data. Our integration is set up so that your GDPR obligations remain intact and your customer data does not leave the EU unnecessarily.

TomTom is a European company with data residency within the EU. A standard data processing agreement is available. We tie client-side API keys to specific domains via the Developer Portal, so a leaked key does not work everywhere. Server-side keys are kept in a secret manager with automatic rotation. For end-user location data we apply data minimisation: coordinates are sent only where functionally necessary and are not logged persistently.

  • EU data residency (TomTom Amsterdam)
  • Data processing agreement available
  • Referrer-restricted client-side keys
  • Server-side keys in a secret manager
  • Key rotation as standard operational practice
  • Data minimisation for location coordinates

Frequently asked questions about TomTom integrations

Dutch location technology company based in Amsterdam, offering APIs for Maps, Geocoding, Search, Routing, Traffic, EV Charging and Logistics. A European alternative to Google Maps and Mapbox.

EU data residency (GDPR), predictable commercial terms, and logistics-specific features such as lorry restrictions that Google Maps does not offer.

Via an API key, passed either as a query parameter or in the X-API-Key header. A production setup typically separates keys per environment and service, with referrer restrictions on client-side keys.

Calculate optimal routes by vehicle type, taking traffic and areas to avoid into account. Matrix Routing handles multiple origins and destinations. The Logistics API adds lorry restrictions, and Waypoint Optimisation sequences multi-stop journeys.

Yes. The EV Charging Stations API provides charging point information, and the Long Distance EV Routing API plans routes that include charging stops based on battery capacity and consumption curve.

Maps SDK for Web (MapLibre GL), Android (Kotlin) and iOS (Swift). Community wrappers exist for React and React Native.

A basic Maps SDK integration takes a few days. A fleet routing scenario takes two to five weeks. A full field service app with EV routing and a mobile SDK takes four to eight weeks.

TomTom is a European company, data stays within the EU, and the data processing agreement follows the EU format. Location data is only shared where functionally necessary, with no profiling of the kind some US providers engage in.
