Receiving & putaway Order picking with scanning Real-time stock movements

Custom warehouse management software development

Appfront builds custom warehouse management and WMS software that drives your entire flow of goods: from receiving and put-away, through location management and order picking with barcode and GS1/EAN scanning, to dispatch and real-time stock movements. It includes batch, serial and best-before tracking for traceability, and integrations with your ERP, webshop and carriers. Tailored to your warehouse layout, picking strategy and product types, for wholesale, e-commerce and fulfilment, manufacturing and logistics companies that want their warehouse to run faster and with fewer errors.

What is warehouse management software?

Warehouse management software, often called a warehouse management system or WMS, directs and records the physical flow of goods in your warehouse. It guides every step in which goods move: the receipt of incoming deliveries, putaway to a warehouse location, picking customer orders with barcode scanning, and dispatch to the customer. Real-time stock movements run alongside every action, so it is always clear where an item is and how much is still available.

The core of a WMS is the work on the floor. Where off-the-shelf packages often force your warehouse into a fixed mould, reality differs greatly from one organisation to another: in warehouse layout, picking strategy, product types and integrations with other systems. Custom software fits your process rather than the other way round, and grows with you as your range, volumes or sites change. That prevents shadow administration in loose spreadsheets and keeps your stock picture reliable.

The distinction from inventory management matters. A WMS is concerned with the flow of goods and logistics on the floor. Counting, valuing and replenishing stock belongs to inventory management software. The two work closely together, but they place the emphasis differently. Every location in view

Warehouse locations, pallet spaces and bins are recorded and linked to stock. A new member of staff finds any item via the scanner, without depending on whoever knows the warehouse by heart.

Scanning prevents errors

At receiving, putaway and picking, your team scans the item and location. Wrong quantities or places are caught directly on the scanner, so mis-picks and returns caused by picking errors decline.

Real-time and traceable

Every booking feeds directly into stock and can be traced back to the employee, order and moment. This keeps your stock levels current and lets you retrace batches and shipments precisely afterwards.

How we build your warehouse management software

We work step by step and involve your warehouse staff and logistics managers early in the process. From a thorough assessment of your flow of goods, warehouse layout and integrations, through to go-live and ongoing management, every step is aimed at software your team on the floor understands and trusts quickly, even during the busiest peak day.

1
Discovery & scope

We map out your flow of goods: receiving, put-away, location structure, picking strategy, dispatch and the integrations with your ERP and webshop. Together we determine which processes weigh most heavily and where most of the time and errors occur.

2
Design

We design the data model for items, locations and orders, the scanning flows for the handheld terminals and the integrations. We design the scanner interface mobile-first, so it stays quick and usable even while wearing gloves.

3
Build & iteration

We build in short iterations with automated testing and monitoring. You test working scanning flows in your own warehouse along the way and help set priorities and ensure they fit day-to-day practice.

4
Go-live & management

Controlled go-live with data validation and a safety net, followed by ongoing management, monitoring and further development as your volumes grow or you add extra locations and branches.

What warehouse management software actually does

We tailor every application specifically to your warehouse, processes and integrations. Below are the functionalities we most often deliver for organisations digitising their flow of goods and order picking.

Receiving & put-away

Incoming deliveries are scanned and checked against the purchase order or delivery note. The software suggests a put-away location, records batch, serial or expiry details, and books the stock in immediately, so a delivery is available to sell within a few steps.

Location management

Racking, pallet spaces and bins are recorded with their own location code. The software keeps track of what is where, supports fixed and dynamic locations, and helps with reorganisation, so fast-moving items end up close to the pick station.

Order picking with scanning

The software directs pick lists and pick routes and supports order, batch and zone picking. At each pick, the employee scans the location and item using GS1 or EAN codes, so the right unit is picked in the right quantity and errors are caught immediately.

Shipping & labels

After picking comes checking, packing and dispatch. The software integrates with carriers and shipping platforms for shipping labels and track-and-trace, prints packing slips and feeds the dispatch status back to your webshop, so the customer is kept informed automatically.

Real-time stock movements

Every receipt, transfer and pick feeds straight through to stock by location. You see in real time what is physically available, what is reserved for open orders and where stock is on the move, without duplicate entry or delayed corrections.

Batch, serial & expiry dates

For each item, you specify whether it is tracked by batch or lot number, serial number or expiry date. Using FEFO and FIFO logic, the software automatically picks the correct unit, so you maintain full traceability for warranties, quality control and recalls.

Who we build warehouse management software for

Warehouse work differs greatly from one type of organisation to another. For each of these, we build software that suits their flow of goods, picking strategy and the integrations their work requires.

Wholesale

Wholesalers with pallet locations, picking by case or unit, and delivery to business customers. The software supports purchase orders, goods receipt on site, order picking and the integration with your ERP, so stock and orders stay in sync.

E-commerce & fulfilment

Webshops and fulfilment partners handling high volumes of small orders and peak days. The software integrates with your webshop and marketplaces, supports batch and zone picking, and speeds up picking, packing and shipping, even at high volumes.

Production

Manufacturing companies managing raw materials, semi-finished products and finished goods. The software supports warehouse locations for the shop floor and connects with your planning. See also our production planning software.

Logistics service providers

Logistics service providers working for multiple clients, with stock separated and reporting per client. The software keeps goods flows separate and connects with the wider supply chain. See also our transport software.

Technology and integrations

We build with a modern, maintainable web stack and connect the WMS to the systems your warehouse works with. For warehouse management, the most relevant integrations are: with your ERP or accounting package for items and orders, with your webshop or marketplace for customer orders and stock updates, and with carriers for shipping labels and track and trace. We build scanning on GS1 standards such as EAN and SSCC. If your focus is stock counting and valuation, see inventory management software or our broader custom software services.

Why choose Appfront for your warehouse management software?

Appfront builds custom software and always starts with a thorough analysis of your goods flow, warehouse layout and integrations. Warehouse software needs to be technically sound, but it also has to work on the shop floor: fast, robust and easy to understand for anyone holding a scanner, even on a busy peak day.

We build for scalability and write clear documentation, so your own team or a future supplier can understand and manage the software. No black box, just transparent code and clear agreements on integrations, authorisation, logging and management. With no vendor lock-in, you remain the owner of your software and your data.

You work with a dedicated point of contact who understands both the technology and the logistics practice. That keeps lines short, prevents miscommunication and speeds up decisions when choices about picking, locations or integrations need to be made during the build.

Security and reliability in warehouse management software

A WMS is business-critical: if the system stops, the warehouse stops. That is why we build for reliability and availability. We work with role-based access, so an order picker has different rights from a team leader, and we record every booking in an audit trail traceable to the employee, order and moment. If you work for multiple clients, we separate stock, orders and reporting per client.

We build in line with the GDPR and OWASP security standards, with encryption in transit and at rest. To ensure continuity, we provide monitoring, alerting, backups and a careful approach to integrations, so a fault in an external system doesn't bring your warehouse to a standstill. Order and shipping data can contain personal data, so we apply data minimisation here too.

Frequently asked questions about warehouse management software

Answers to the questions we are asked most often about custom warehouse management and WMS software.

Warehouse management software, also known as a warehouse management system (WMS), directs and records the physical flow of goods in your warehouse: receiving and putaway of incoming goods, assigning and tracking warehouse locations, order picking with barcode or GS1/EAN scanning, dispatch, and the associated real-time stock movements. It is about directing the work on the shop floor: where an item is, which order is being picked now and what has just been booked in or out. Custom software lets you set this up around your own warehouse, processes and integrations, rather than adapting your way of working to a standard package.

Warehouse management software (WMS) focuses on the flow of goods and the work on the warehouse floor: receiving, putaway, location management, order picking with scanning, and dispatch. Inventory management software focuses on counting, valuing and replenishing stock: stock levels, reorder points, stocktaking and inventory valuation. The two overlap around stock levels but place their emphasis differently. If you primarily want to direct physical logistics and picking, you are in the right place. If your priority is stock counting, purchasing and valuation, see our page on inventory management software.

We build custom software. Warehouses differ widely in layout, picking strategy, product types and integrations. A fulfilment provider handling thousands of small e-commerce orders works very differently from a wholesaler with pallet locations or a manufacturer with raw materials and semi-finished goods. Custom software fits your actual process and can grow as your range, volumes or sites change. After an intake conversation, we agree together which functionality matters most and in what order to develop it, without promising a fixed lead time or price we cannot yet substantiate.

Yes. Scanning is at the heart of a good WMS. We work with barcodes and GS1 standards such as EAN and SSCC codes, and build scanning flows for handheld scanners, ring scanners, or the camera of a smartphone or a rugged Android terminal. On receipt, your staff scan incoming goods; on putaway, they scan the location; and on picking, they scan the item and the location, so errors are caught immediately. Where it adds value, we also support RFID or pick-to-light. We design the scanning interface mobile-first, so it stays fast and usable even when wearing gloves.

Yes, that is usually the whole point. A WMS rarely stands alone. We integrate with your ERP or accounting package for products, purchase orders and financial processing, and with your webshop or marketplace for incoming customer orders and for reporting stock levels and shipping status back. For dispatch, we integrate with carriers and shipping platforms for labels and track and trace. We build these integrations via APIs, EDI or web services, with clear agreements on which system is the source of truth for which data, so that stock and orders stay in step.

For many industries, traceability is a hard requirement. We record for each item whether it is tracked by batch or lot number, serial number or best-before date (THT). These attributes are captured on receipt, and during picking the correct batch or serial is allocated, using FEFO (first expired, first out) logic for products with a shelf life. This lets you trace afterwards exactly which batch went to which customer, which is essential for recalls, warranties and quality control in sectors such as food, pharmaceuticals and engineering.

Yes. We regularly take over existing applications, including those built by another party. We review the architecture, scanning flows, integrations and data model, document the current setup and propose improvements. From that point on, we can handle changes, new integrations and monitoring, or modernise the software step by step into a maintainable state, without your warehouse grinding to a halt.

We build for organisations with an active flow of goods: wholesalers with pallet locations and order picking, e-commerce and fulfilment providers handling large numbers of small orders, manufacturers managing raw materials, semi-finished goods and finished products, and logistics service providers working for several clients. For each of these, we tailor the WMS to their picking strategy, product types and integrations, with scalability to additional locations or sites in mind.
