Custom international e-commerce software development

Appfront builds custom software for webshops that sell across borders: prices, currencies and ranges per country, local payment methods, correct customs data on shipments, returns flows that aren't manual every time, and integration with your VAT administration. For sellers who want to go from one country to five without building the same webshop five times.

What is international e-commerce software?

International e-commerce software is the layer that lets your webshop differ by country without maintaining a separate shop for each one. Price, currency, language, range, payment methods, shipping costs, delivery promises and returns terms all vary by market, whereas your stock, product data and order process stay the same.

The first cross-border sale usually goes smoothly: someone orders, you ship, done. It becomes difficult by the tenth. That's when you discover your prices aren't competitive in another market because you're converting them from euros, that buyers drop off because their usual payment method is missing, and that parcels get stuck because there's no commodity code on the consignment.

Custom software captures those differences in a model rather than in exceptions. See also our broader pages on e-commerce development and on building custom software.

Price per market, not per exchange rate

A price that's simply converted from the euro rate is rarely the price that works in that market. We build prices per country as their own value, with conversion only as a fallback.

Paying the way people pay there

iDEAL works here and nowhere else. In other markets, people expect an advance bank transfer, a local card or pay-later options. If that method is missing, some of your buyers drop off at the final step.

Customs data from the source

Commodity code, country of origin and customs value belong to the product, not the shipment. If they're in your product data, they travel with it automatically and your parcels don't get stuck.

Since August 2026, selling into another member state requires EPR registration in that country; without a valid number there is no market access. The register for this sits with EPR software, and the check at shipping with the EPR app.

How we build your international e-commerce software

We start with the countries you already receive orders from and with the orders that went wrong. That's where the real picture lies. Sales, logistics and finance join the discussion early, because these three have conflicting interests in the same decisions.

1
Discovery & scope

We map which countries you sell to or want to sell to, which differences apply there, and which of those you want to support deliberately. Not every country deserves its own setup; we make that choice explicit.

2
Design

We design the country model for pricing, range and terms, the connection to payment and shipping partners, and the data flow into your accounts. We also determine which data belongs to the product and which to the order.

3
Build & integrate

We build in short iterations and start with one new country alongside your existing market. We connect payment service, carrier and accounting integrations early, because that is where most assumptions fall apart.

4
Go-live & expansion

Controlled go-live per country, with real orders and real returns before you scale up. Afterwards, ongoing management and expansion into further markets, which then becomes a configuration step rather than a project.

What international e-commerce software actually does

A seller of a single product to consumers has different challenges from a wholesaler with a broad range. These are the features we most often deliver.

Countries, currencies & prices

A separate price, currency, VAT display and range per country, with the option to exclude products from a market. Prices are their own values per market, not a derivative of an exchange rate that moves daily.

Language and local content

Translated product descriptions and terms and conditions, with a workflow that shows what has been translated and what has not yet. See also our AI translation software to speed up that process.

Local payment methods

Integration with the payment methods that are customary in each market, in the right order and with the right default choice per country. A wrong order in the final step costs more revenue than most people assume.

Shipping & customs

Shipping rates and delivery promises per country and per carrier, with commodity code, country of origin and customs value drawn from your product data. Connects to our customs handling.

Cross-border returns

A country-specific returns process with a correct return address, clarity about who bears the costs, and the administrative handling that comes with a cross-border return. This is the part most often missing.

Integration with your accounts

Orders flow into your accounts with the correct tax attributes, so that declarations and returns are accurate. See our VAT compliance software for that side.

Who we build international e-commerce software for

The complexity depends less on your size than on the number of countries and the type of customer. These are the client types we most often build for.

Brands expanding abroad themselves

Sellers expanding from the Netherlands into neighbouring countries who find that their existing webshop only partly copes. For them, the price and payment side weighs most heavily, because that is where buyers drop off.

Wholesalers and B2B sellers

Businesses with customer-specific prices, tiered pricing and credit agreements that also differ by country. See also our B2B e-commerce portal.

Sellers via marketplaces

Businesses that sell on foreign platforms alongside their own shop and want to keep one stock and one product database. Their challenge is mainly synchronisation and preventing double sales.

Manufacturers with their own distribution

Manufacturers who work with a different distributor or their own subsidiary in each country. They need a model in which each country has its own range, price and delivery route without separate systems.

Why choose Appfront for your international e-commerce software?

Appfront builds custom software and starts with the countries where your orders actually come from. In almost every project it turns out that foreign orders are already coming in and being sorted out by hand, and it is precisely these exceptions that show where the model needs to flex.

We build the differences per country into the model rather than into custom rules in ten places. Adding a country then becomes a configuration step: filling in prices, payment methods, shipping rates and terms. Without that model, every new market is a project all over again.

We keep the customs and tax attributes at the source. Commodity code, country of origin and tax treatment belong to the product and the customer, not to the shipment or the invoice. When they sit there, they flow through correctly everywhere and nobody has to fix them afterwards.

  • Market-specific pricing as a feature in its own right, not as currency conversion
  • Local payment methods in the right order for each country
  • Customs data on the product rather than on the shipment
  • A returns process that works for each country, including costs and address
  • One stock and one product database across all channels
  • Adding a country is configuration, not a project
  • Tax attributes that flow through to your accounts
  • Multilingual content with visibility of what has yet to be translated
  • Clear documentation your own team can maintain
  • Ongoing management for new markets or changed rules

Security and privacy for cross-border sales

When you sell across borders, you process personal data of consumers from several countries. Within the European Union the GDPR applies everywhere, but the supervisory authority you deal with differs, and outside the Union separate rules apply again. We apply data minimisation and record the legal basis and retention period for each data flow.

We keep payment details out of your own systems. Card details go directly to your payment provider and you only store a reference, so the most demanding requirements around card payments stay with that party rather than with you.

Technically, we build to the OWASP security standards, with encryption in transit and at rest, role-based access and audit logging of orders and price changes. More on our approach: information security policy and CVD policy.

  • GDPR-compliant processing and data minimisation
  • Legal basis and retention period for each data flow
  • Card details held by the payment provider, not by you
  • Audit logging of orders and price changes
  • Encryption in transit (TLS 1.2+) and at rest
  • Role-based access and least privilege
  • Separation between markets in reporting and access
  • Built to the OWASP standards

Frequently asked questions about international e-commerce software

Answers to the questions we are asked most often about software for cross-border sales.

It is the layer that lets your webshop differ by country without you maintaining a separate shop for each one. Price, currency, language, range, payment methods, shipping costs, delivery promises and returns terms vary by market, while your stock, product data and order process stay the same.

Because a converted price is rarely the price that works in that market. Competition, customary price points and shipping costs differ, and a price that moves with the exchange rate looks unreliable. We therefore build prices per country as their own values, using conversion only as a fallback for markets you have not yet set up separately.

More important than almost any other element, because it is the last step before someone pays. iDEAL works in the Netherlands and almost nowhere else; in other markets people expect an advance bank transfer, a local card or pay-later options. If the customary method is missing, some of your buyers drop out after they have already filled everything in.

At the very least a commodity code, the country of origin and a customs value per item. These belong to the product rather than the shipment: if they sit in your product data, they flow automatically through to your carrier. If they are missing, parcels get stuck at customs, and you only notice when the customer calls.

With a returns process for each country, because a Dutch returns address rarely works for a customer in another country. For each market, record where goods are returned, who bears the costs and how the administrative handling runs, including for tax. This is the part most often missing, and adding it afterwards is the most expensive.

They touch, but they are two systems. This software ensures an order carries the correct tax attributes: which country, which type of customer, which supply. What happens to those attributes in your VAT return and your EC sales list belongs to VAT compliance software, for which we have a separate page.

Rarely. Separate shops mean maintaining several sites, updating product data several times and more places where things can go wrong. A single shop with a country model is almost always cheaper and quicker to expand. Only where the offering is fundamentally different in each market can a separate environment be justified.

We build custom solutions. Which differences between countries matter varies greatly by range and by type of customer, and standard platforms force a model that often simply doesn't fit. After an intake conversation, we'll decide together which country to start with and which differences to set up first.
