Food safety is not spreadsheet work.

The agri-food sector becomes more heavily regulated every year. HACCP plans, BRC and IFS audits, FSSC 22000 certification, Food Information to Consumers Regulation 1169/2011, Skal for organic, IKB for the meat sector, GlobalG.A.P. for cultivation, FSMA for export to the United States, and on top of that CSRD is coming, with CO2 footprint per product. Anyone trying to keep up with this in spreadsheets and loose emails will sooner or later run into a non-conformity or, worse, a recall that takes too long to carry out.

At the same time, agri-food processes are more complex than in many other sectors. Recipes with dozens of ingredients, allergens that can carry over through cross-contamination, shelf life that varies per pallet, chilled transport with temperature requirements, and customers (supermarkets, foodservice, exporters) who each use their own EDI standard. Standard ERP packages cover part of this, but the specific flow of your products often still lives in people's heads, on paper or in loose tools.

We build custom software development for agri-food businesses that want to anchor their recipe management, lot administration and compliance in one workable system. Not a generic multi-million-pound ERP implementation, but focused applications that run alongside your existing systems, or that fully digitise your operation if you are starting from scratch. Our experience with software for the manufacturing industry and with production control via a MES system is directly relevant, because food production shares many patterns with that world, just with an additional layer of food safety on top.

If you supply retailers, a certificate comes with that. On the cultivation side, we develop this into GlobalG.A.P. crop registration and audit, with withdrawal period monitoring and traceability down to the batch.

Three types of software for agri-food.

Which one fits depends on where you sit in the chain and what compliance pressure you face. In the first conversation we advise which type of project suits your situation.

Compact project · fixed sprint budget

Compliance and traceability app

A focused application that runs alongside your ERP and specifically handles HACCP, allergen and lot tracking. Production staff log critical control points on a tablet or phone, with mandatory entry moments at the right points in the workflow. Allergens are built up automatically per recipe from the ingredients, and in the event of a recall you can see within minutes which production batches went to which customers. Suited to producers who want to keep their existing ERP but strengthen the food safety layer on top.

Production and recipe management platform

Full recipe management with BOM structure, automatic nutritional value calculation per 100 grams, allergen inheritance, cost roll-up and seasonally sensitive planning. Includes production planning, integration with MES or floor-level weighing equipment, label generation under 1169/2011, and shelf-life management with FEFO picking guidance for the warehouse. When ingredients change, nutritional values and allergens roll through automatically to all dependent products. Suited to dairy, meat, bakery, soft drink, snack and convenience food producers.

Supply chain platform for cooperatives and distribution

Mission-critical platform connecting growers, processors, distributors and retail customers. Supply planning based on supply and demand and season, EDI order traffic to foodservice, retail and exporters, chilled transport tracking with temperature logging, a B2B portal for customers with self-service for repeat orders, and sustainability reporting for CSRD per product, customer and year. Each grower or producer has their own portal within the platform, with a farm app or livestock module, and central data for the cooperative or distributor.

If your question relates specifically to certification, we have dedicated pages for that: IFS and BRCGS software for monitoring the knock-out requirements, and an app for production floor inspection rounds for recording findings on the spot.

If you work with GMO-free streams, the separation during storage and transport must be demonstrable. See the app for stream segregation and intake.

What you get at the end.

Software that passes the audit runs in your own environment and can be managed by your own IT team. No black box, no vendor lock-in.

  • The application itselfProduction and staging environments in your own cloud (GCP, AWS or Azure) or on our infrastructure. Ready for audit and certification.
  • Complete codebase and documentationSource code, architecture overview and build instructions. You own the code and can switch supplier at any time.
  • HACCP and audit handbookA description of how the system carries out CCP checks, lot tracking and allergen flow. Suitable to hand over to your BRC or FSSC 22000 auditor.
  • Training for production and QASessions for key users (quality, planning, production managers), plus short video tutorials for staff on the shop floor.
  • Management and ongoing development (optional)Monitoring, security patches and further development based on new regulations. A fixed monthly fee with clear response times.

When custom is the right choice.

Four patterns in which we support agri-food businesses. If you recognise one, we'd be happy to talk about what a focused build could deliver.

Compliance pressure

HACCP gets stuck in Excel

Your CCP records are scattered across paper forms, spreadsheets and loose folders. During a BRC or IFS audit it takes days to bring everything to light, and sooner or later a gap appears in the records.

Recall risk

Lot tracking doesn't add up

You know which ingredients went into a production batch, but no longer which pallets went to which customers. A recall would now mean phoning customers one by one instead of pressing a button.

Recipe complexity

Nutritional values and allergens take too much time

Calculating nutritional values, allergens and claims for each new product takes hours. When an ingredient changes, everything has to be redone, and labels fall behind reality.

CSRD and sustainability

Footprint data is missing

Retail customers are asking for CO2, water and energy figures per product, and CSRD is on its way. You have the measurement data, in energy contracts, transport documents and telemetry, but no system that brings it together.

Who we build for.

The agri-food sector is broad. Every link in the chain has its own processes, and our custom software is tailored to your place in that chain.

Production

Food producers

Dairy, meat, bakery, soft drinks, snacks and convenience. Recipes with BOM and allergens, production planning, labelling, batch administration and HACCP records integrated into one flow on the production floor.

Distribution

Food distributors and wholesalers

B2B suppliers to hospitality, retail and foodservice. Customer order portals, EDI integrations, chilled logistics with FEFO picking, route optimisation and invoicing including deposits and levies.

Primary

Arable and horticulture, livestock farming

Arable farming, glasshouse horticulture, livestock farming and fisheries. Crop administration on the tractor, pesticide records under GlobalG.A.P., animal administration with treatments and milk recording, catch records for aquaculture.

Cooperative

Growers, cooperatives and supply chain coordinators

Vegetable, fruit and flower growers, cooperatives and track-and-trace coordinators for fresh supply chains. Intake planning, distribution, quality assessment and passing costs on to members.

Food tech

Alternative proteins and urban farming

Producers of plant-based proteins, fermented products, vertical farms and insect farming. They often build their process from scratch and look for software that grows alongside rapid iteration of recipe and production process.

Dietary supplements

Supplements and functional food

Producers of dietary supplements under EU GMP, with specific requirements around claims, certifications and traceability of active substances back to the supplier. If you farm organically, the Skal mass balance applies as well.

Compliance and standards, translated into software.

You decide which certifications are relevant for your products and customers. We make sure the software delivers the controls, registrations and reporting in a way that keeps working consistently, even after years.

  • HACCP: critical control pointsConfiguration per production process, mandatory data entry at the right moments, alerts when limits are exceeded, and a complete audit log per CCP.
  • BRC, IFS Food, FSSC 22000Reporting and evidence tailored to the three most common international food safety standards. Audit files are built ready for export.
  • Food Information Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011Label generation with mandatory nutritional values, allergen emphasis, claims and country of origin. Including version history per label.
  • Skal Organic and IKBFor organic products and the Dutch meat sector: registration, controls and data delivery in line with the applicable regulations.
  • GlobalG.A.P. and VGBFor arable farming, horticulture and livestock: cultivation and treatment administration, crop protection product logging and veterinary registration.
  • FSMA and CSRDFor exports to the United States and for sustainability reporting: data models that already take these upcoming reporting requirements into account.

How an agri-food project works.

1

Introductory call and scoping

We map where you sit in the chain, which certification applies (HACCP, BRC, IFS, Skal, IKB, GlobalG.A.P.), which ERP or MES is already in use, and what is causing the most pain: compliance, recall speed, planning or sustainability.

2

On-site process analysis

A day on the production floor or with the growers to see the actual flow. Where registration currently happens, who touches the system, and which screens need to work on a tablet while wearing gloves. At the end, you have a concrete scope with the first flows.

3

Build in sprints with QA feedback

A working build every two weeks. Your quality and production teams test along with us on real recipes and batch data. Compliance components are validated early, so audit readiness does not become a separate project at the end.

4

Rollout and certification support

Phased rollout to production, warehouse or growers. We supply documentation for your certifying body, join you in a trial audit, and remain available for further development should regulations change. If your operation is still largely manual and you need a foundation first, we often tie the project to a custom ERP system project so that the core administration and the food-specific layer work together as one.

Frequently asked questions.

What clients in the agri-food sector usually want to know before we start.

Do you replace Microsoft Dynamics 365 Food, Infor M3 or Aptean Food?
For large enterprise implementations of that type of package, we are not the right partner. Those are multi-year projects with specialised implementation partners. We do build custom solutions in the agri-app domain, grower cooperative portals, allergen and recall flows, or targeted additions that run alongside your existing Dynamics Food, Infor M3, Aptean Food, Plex MES Food, CSB or Frigus via API or EDI. In practice, we often see the package handle central registration while our software provides the food-specific layer around it: production floor, allergens, customer portals.
How do you handle HACCP compliance in the software?
Critical control points are configured per production process, with mandatory data entry at set moments and out-of-spec alerts sent to production management and QA. All records carry a timestamp, user and location, so they are auditable and cannot be changed after the fact. Reporting is aligned with BRC, IFS Food and FSSC 22000 so it can go straight into audit files. When the HACCP plan changes, the history of earlier versions is retained, including who changed what and when.
How does allergen and cross-contamination tracking work?
Allergens are recorded at ingredient level and flow automatically through to every recipe that contains that ingredient. The system detects the risk of cross-contamination via shared lines or equipment, and can enforce cleaning procedures between production runs. On the label you get the correct 'may contain traces of' claims based on actual production history, not assumptions.
How quickly can we recall a batch?
With a well-organised batch administration, the recall question is answered within minutes: which production batches contain this lot, which customers received which pallets, and how much volume is still in your own stock. We build that flow so that a single search produces a complete recall report that you can share directly with the NVWA and your customers.
Can you integrate with our existing ERP, MES or weighing equipment?
Yes, in agri-food this is almost always part of the scope. We integrate with SAP, Dynamics, Infor M3, Plex MES, weighing and labelling equipment and EDI platforms via standard interfaces. For our approach, see our page on smart API integrations, where we describe the process in more detail.
How do you handle CSRD and sustainability data?
CO2, water and energy data are built up per batch or per product from input data: energy invoices, transport kilometres, telemetry data. These are then rolled up into product, customer or annual reporting. For the wider reporting requirements we often work together with our CSRD reporting software, which can connect to your agri-food data.
What determines the cost of an agri-food project?
Mainly: how many production processes need to be covered, how many certifications are included in the scope, and the number of integrations with existing systems. A focused compliance app for a single production site is a different project from a chain platform for a hundred growers. After the scoping conversation we give a substantiated estimate with a sprint budget and a clear phasing, so you can judge per phase whether the next step is worthwhile for you.
Do you also build apps for use on the tractor or in the barn?
Yes. For arable farming and greenhouse horticulture we build apps that run on a Chromebook or tablet in the cab, with an offline mode for fields without signal and recording of crop protection products, field operations and harvest data. For livestock farming it's similar: animal administration, treatments, milk recording and integration with sensors or robots. The interface is always tailored to the working environment, with large buttons, glove-friendly controls and minimal typing.
What about security and ownership of the data?
The data is and remains yours. We deploy in your own cloud environment (GCP, AWS or Azure) or, if you prefer not to manage it yourself, on our infrastructure in Europe. Encryption in transit and at rest, audit logging as standard, GDPR-compliant and NEN 7510 where relevant. A penetration test in the final sprint is standard for larger projects. When you part ways, you receive the complete codebase and a data export: no lock-in.
