What is a digital product passport?

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a standardised digital record that gathers all relevant data about a single physical product: composition, origin, carbon footprint, repair instructions and end-of-life guidance. It is accessible via a QR code or NFC tag on the product itself. The aim is to support the circular economy and transparency across the entire supply chain.

The DPP forms part of the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and existing sector regulations such as the EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542. Each sector has its own timeline: batteries lead (from February 2027), followed by textiles and electronics, then construction materials, chemicals, packaging and automotive. We build DPP platforms that bring your product data, supplier data and compliance requirements together in a single source that remains accurate beyond the statutory deadline.

DPP regulations by sector.

Batteries (EU 2023/1542) — mandatory from February 2027 for EV batteries, batteries for light means of transport (LMT) and industrial batteries from 2 kWh. Data fields include, among others: chemical composition, carbon footprint per life-cycle stage, origin of critical raw materials, capacity, and repair and remanufacturing instructions. The due diligence requirements for the battery supply chain are set out in the main regulation.

Textiles and clothing: 2027-2028 under ESPR. Data fields include fibre composition, country of origin of the main production stages, presence of substances of very high concern (SVHC/REACH), recyclability and repair information. Given extended producer responsibility (EPR) for textiles, the DPP aligns with national recycling contributions.

Electronics: consumer and professional electronics follow between 2027 and 2030, depending on product group. Fields include energy rating, spare part availability, disassembly instructions, software update policy and recycled material percentage.

Construction materials: under the Construction Products Regulation and ESPR from 2027-2028. Fields include, among others, declarations of performance (DoP), environmental product declarations (EPD), hazardous substances, reusability and disassembly.

Chemicals and packaging: from 2028 under ESPR and the revised Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Fields include substance identity, hazard classes, recycled content, recyclability and linkage to the European SCIP database for substances of very high concern.

Automotive and vehicle fleets: from 2028. Fields include vehicle and component identification, recycled content, end-of-life route and alignment with the existing End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) Directive.

Food and agri: partly covered by sector protocols and the EU Pact for Skills; there is no full ESPR obligation yet, but supply chain transparency requirements around origin, organic certification and footprint are growing. For clients already collecting data here, we often build a lightweight DPP variant that draws directly from their existing agri-food software data.

The delegated acts differ by product group and the exact deadlines sometimes shift. In the first conversation, we will map out, for your specific product catalogue, which obligation applies when and which data fields you already have available.

Three flavours of DPP software.

Depending on your sector, product volume and how far you already capture product data in a structured way. In the first conversation, we determine which variant fits and which compliance deadlines apply.

What you get at the end.

A working DPP platform that is ready for your sector's legal deadline, plus everything around it so you can manage and expand it yourself.

  • The DPP platform itselfProduction and staging environments, running in your cloud (GCP, AWS or Azure) or with us. Public product pages for each item, hosted on a subdomain of your own brand.
  • Sector data modelA data model aligned with ESPR and the sector delegated acts: batteries (EU 2023/1542), textiles, electronics, construction materials, or your own mix. Extendable when the regulation changes.
  • QR and NFC generationA unique identifier per product (linked to GTIN, serial number or batch). Bulk export to your packaging or labelling process. NFC for high-value products where a QR code does not physically fit.
  • PIM, ERP and API integrationsBidirectional synchronisation with your existing systems. We work through smart API integrations so that product data comes from a single source of truth and is never retyped by hand.
  • Supplier portalA secure environment in which your tier-1 and tier-2 suppliers upload data, certificates and declarations. With validation, reminders and a clear overview of which products are complete and which are not.
  • Audit trail and role managementAn immutable log of who changed which data field and when. Role-based access for inspectors, end customers, recyclers and internal teams. Attack surface reduced with SSO and MFA where appropriate.
  • Codebase plus documentationFull source code, architecture overview and runbook. No lock-in to a SaaS vendor — you can continue with another party or an in-house team if you prefer.
  • Maintenance contract (optional)Monitoring, backups, security patches, and ongoing development as ESPR delegated acts for your sector come into force. Fixed monthly fee, tiered response times.

What should a DPP contain?

The exact data fields are set out per sector in a delegated act, but under most DPP regimes the following set recurs: product identifier (GTIN, serial number or batch), manufacturer and the other supply-chain actors, material composition with percentages per substance, substances of concern based on REACH/SVHC, carbon footprint per life-cycle stage, energy rating where relevant, repair and maintenance information, end-of-life instructions (recycling and disassembly), certificates and attestations, and transport and storage data.

For high-value products or products with an expected longer lifespan, ownership history is added: who bought the product when, resold it, or had it repaired. This is not a requirement, but it is a feature from which many customers in the second-hand and remanufacturing chain derive direct value. A custom DPP platform takes both layers into account: mandatory fields to meet regulation, and optional fields to create commercial value.

When custom DPP software is the right choice.

Standard SaaS platforms exist for product footprint and sustainability: SAP Sustainability Footprint, IBM Envizi, Salesforce Net Zero Cloud, Watershed, Climatiq and Provenance. We don't replace them for enterprises already using them. We do build custom software in these situations:

PIM integration

Akeneo or Pimcore is your source

Your product data already lives in Akeneo, Pimcore or Sales Layer and you don't want to move away from it. A SaaS DPP forces you into double entry; custom software reads directly from your PIM and publishes back to a single passport page.

Sector-specific

Sector flows are unusual

For manufacturing, batteries or textiles, the data fields and validations are so specific that a generic SaaS tool constantly requires workarounds. Custom software covers your workflow without compromise.

Supply chain

You collect data from suppliers

Your tier-2 and tier-3 suppliers provide material data, certificates and CO2 figures. Standard SaaS offers no suitable portal for this; we build the onboarding and reminder process that works within your supply chain.

Group structure

Multiple brands, one compliance

You have a parent company with several brands or business units, each with its own products and suppliers. A multi-tenant DPP platform offers central compliance plus brand-specific presentation.

Track-and-trace

You are already building traceability

You have, or are considering, a track-and-trace system. A DPP is then a natural extension: the same identifiers, the same events, and different consumer and inspector views.

Second-hand & recycling

Ownership history is valuable

For high-value products (bicycles, machines, furniture, clothing), a DPP with an ownership history and repair log creates immediate value in the second-hand market and with recycling partners. This is a feature that standard SaaS rarely covers out of the box.

How a DPP project runs.

1

Introduction and scoping

A conversation to understand which regulations apply to your products, which deadline is relevant, and what product data you already have in structured form. We map the gaps between your current PIM/ERP and what the delegated act for your sector requires.

2

Data model workshop

A workshop with your product management, quality and IT teams. We map which data fields come from which source system, which supplier data you need to collect, and what the public product page will look like. At the end: a sector-specific data model and an initial screen flow.

3

Building in sprints

A working build every sprint. First the core data model and the public QR page, then the PIM/ERP integrations, then the supplier portal and admin tooling. You test along the way, and a few suppliers test too. A first tier goes live after a few sprints.

4

Pilot with one product line

You start with a single product or product category. QR codes go on the packaging, and a defined group of customers and inspectors scan them. We optimise based on real usage before rolling out to your full catalogue.

5

Rollout and ongoing management

Phased rollout to your full product catalogue and supplier base. Ongoing management for security patches, performance and updates as ESPR delegated acts become active for other product groups.

What shapes a DPP project.

We don't work with product prices or packages. The scope of a project depends on a few concrete factors, which we discuss openly in the first conversation and record in a fixed sprint budget.

Sector and regulation

A DPP under the EU Battery Regulation (2023/1542) has a different data model from a DPP under ESPR for textiles or electronics. The more specific the delegated act, the more validations there are.

Number of integrations

A platform that only reads from Akeneo is quicker to build than one that also synchronises bi-directionally with SAP, Exact, AFAS and feeds a supplier portal.

Product variation

A hundred SKUs using the same template are easier to support than fifty product lines each with their own data model. Variation determines the admin tooling.

Supply chain depth

A tier-1 supplier portal for twenty suppliers is a different beast from a portal that retrieves tier-3 data via tier-1. Onboarding tooling then becomes a module in its own right.

Frequently asked questions.

What clients want to know before we start: DPP deadlines, integrations and data quality.

What are the DPP deadlines per sector?
The EU Battery Regulation (2023/1542) leads, with a DPP obligation from February 2027 for EV batteries, LMT batteries and industrial batteries. Textiles and electronics follow in 2027-2028 under ESPR, construction products in 2027-2028, chemicals and packaging from 2028, and automotive from 2028. The European Commission publishes delegated acts per product group, and the exact dates sometimes shift; we keep the current position up to date for your sector.
How does DPP PIM integration work with Akeneo or Pimcore?
We read your product data bi-directionally via the official Akeneo/Pimcore REST APIs or, with Akeneo Enterprise, via Connect. Product attributes you already manage in your PIM stay there; DPP-specific fields (material percentages, SVHC substances, repair instructions) we record in a logical place, sometimes as a new Akeneo attribute group, sometimes in the DPP platform itself with a reference back. The same pattern applies to Sales Layer.
Where do we get the data for the DPP from?
Drawn from three sources: your own PIM/ERP for product data, your suppliers for material and certificate data, and your production or lab for CO2 and test results. A DPP project therefore begins with a data mapping exercise: for each data field, we establish which source is the leading one, how often it is refreshed, and what happens when data is missing. Many clients discover they already hold more data than they realised, though it is scattered across spreadsheets and emails.
How do we onboard our suppliers onto the DPP?
Through a secure supplier portal with a separate login for each organisation. For each product, it is clear which data is missing, which certificates are expiring, and when a repeat measurement is needed. We build fixed validations (for example, material percentages must add up to 100%), automatic reminders, and escalation to your procurement team. For suppliers who prefer not to use a portal, we offer a structured email or Excel workflow as a fallback.
Does this replace our SAP Sustainability Footprint or IBM Envizi?
No, and that is usually not the intention either. Enterprise platforms such as SAP Sustainability Footprint, IBM Envizi, Salesforce Net Zero Cloud, Watershed and Climatiq handle scope 1/2/3 reporting at group level. A DPP does something different: it collects, per physical product, the data a customer, inspector or recycler needs. We build the DPP platform and, where needed, integrate with your existing sustainability suite rather than competing with it.
What determines the cost of a DPP platform?
The sector and the relevant delegated act, the number of integrations (PIM, ERP, supplier portal, CSRD tools), the product variation and the depth of your supply chain. A first platform for one product line with one PIM integration is a well-defined project; a multi-tenant enterprise DPP with tier 3 supplier data is a larger one. We work with fixed sprint budgets and give a realistic scope range in the first conversation.
Do you work with the EPCIS standard?
Yes. For clients who already record GS1/EPCIS traceability events, we align with those, so the DPP becomes a view on the events held in your EPCIS repository. For clients not yet using EPCIS, we only recommend it where it adds genuine value; for many sectors, a simpler proprietary identifier model is sufficient to meet ESPR requirements.
