Custom exam administration app for examination bodies
Appfront builds apps that allow examination bodies to manage the entire administration around an examination: candidate registration, scheduling of sittings and examiners, administration of the exam, assessment, results and certification. Including confidentiality, the appeals process and the register an institution needs to maintain its accreditation.
What is an examination administration app?
An examination administration app follows a candidate from registration through to certification. The candidate or their employer registers, the institution schedules a sitting with a venue and examiners, the examination is administered and assessed, the result is determined and communicated, and if the candidate passes, a certificate is issued with a validity period and an entry in the register. If the candidate fails, the resit and, where applicable, the appeal follow.
Without an app, this is a chain of forms, emails and spreadsheets. Registration arrives by email, the sitting is in a calendar, the assessment is on paper, the result is in a spreadsheet and the certificate is in a word processor. When an employer phones to ask whether an employee's certificate is still valid, someone has to search for it. When a regulator asks for the process behind a single examination to be reconstructed, it takes days.
We build custom solutions because every examination body has its own regulations. Who may examine, how many examiners are needed per sitting, how an assessment is reached, when a candidate may resit and how an appeal proceeds: all of this is set out in your examination regulations and in the requirements of your accreditation. The app should implement those regulations, not a generic version of them.
Candidate to certificate
Registration, sitting, administration, assessment, result and certificate, all held on a single candidate record, with resits and appeals included.
Sittings and examiners
Scheduling of venues, examiners and invigilators, with the requirements of your regulations applied: qualification, independence and numbers per sitting.
Register and validity
Every certificate held in a register with its validity period, accessible to employers and regulators within the limits you set.
How we build your examination administration app
We start with your examination regulations and with the requirements of the body that accredits you. From these it follows what the app must enforce and what it may leave to the examiner.
Which examinations, which requirements for examiners, how assessment works, and which deadlines apply to results and appeals. We review the regulations and accreditation requirements alongside you.
Registration by candidate or employer, with entry requirements checked before a sitting is allocated.
Scheduling of sittings with examiners and venues, and assessment within the app according to your assessment model, with a second assessor where the regulations require one.
Determining and communicating the result, and issuing the certificate with registration and validity. After that, we take over management of the app.
What an examination administration app does in practice
The components below feature in almost every examination body. Which ones you need depends on your examinations and your regulations.
Registration and eligibility
The candidate or employer registers, and the app checks the entry requirements and payment before a place is allocated.
Sitting schedule
Venues, dates, examiners and invigilators, with checks on qualification and independence for each sitting.
In-app assessment
The assessment model from your regulations, with a second assessor and a recorded outcome for each component.
Result and resit
Determining and communicating the result, with the resit rules and deadlines from your regulations.
Certificate and register
Issuing the certificate with a unique number and validity period, and a register in which validity can be verified.
Objection and appeal
Logging an objection, assigning it to a committee and handling it within the deadline, with the case file attached.
Who we build an exam administration app for
The app is designed for organisations that administer examinations on behalf of an industry, a certification scheme or a statutory framework, and that must account for them.
Industry examination bodies
You administer exams for a profession or sector, under a set of rules and an accreditation you need to keep. The records are your proof.
Certification bodies
Personal certification with a scheme, a validity period and recertification. The register is the core of your service.
Training providers with their own examination office
You train and you examine, and you need to demonstrate that those two roles are kept apart. The app enforces that separation through roles and permissions.
Organisations running examinations on location
Sittings across the country, with examiners who travel and venues that change. Scheduling is the biggest part of the work.

This page covers the administration around the exam: the candidate, the sitting, the examiner and the certificate. If you're after the digital delivery itself, with question banks and tests on screen, see our page on exam software. For managing certificates and recertification there's the certification portal, and you can read about our approach under building an app.
For the examination office handling registrations, capacity, appeals and reporting, there is our exam administration software.
Why choose Appfront for your exam administration app?
Examination administration runs on trust. An error in a result or a breach of confidentiality undermines the accreditation of the institution, and that is what we look at first.
The regulations live inside the app
Who may do what, how many assessors are required and which deadlines apply are enforced rather than merely agreed.
Everything can be traced back
Every action relating to an examination is recorded in the log with name and time. Reconstructing events for the regulator takes minutes.
Separation of training and examining
Whoever trains cannot see the examination. Whoever examines cannot see who trained the candidate. That separation is a right built into the system, not an arrangement.
Security and privacy in an exam administration app
Exam questions, assessments and results are confidential, and the administration contains candidates' personal data. We build with roles scoped to each examination and each sitting: an examiner sees only the sitting they have been assigned to, and exam questions become visible only at the moment of delivery. Every access is logged.
Results and certificates are immutable once confirmed. A correction follows a documented procedure involving a second person and remains visible as a correction. The register can be consulted without exposing the rest of the file.
Frequently asked questions about an exam administration app
Questions that examination organisations ask before getting started.
It manages the administration surrounding an examination from registration to certificate: candidates, sittings, examiners, delivery, assessment, results, resits, appeals and the register. The organisation's regulations are built into the app, so deadlines and authorities are enforced rather than merely agreed.
No. Exam software covers the delivery itself: question banks, on-screen tests and automatic marking. This app covers everything around it. The two can be integrated, so a result from the exam lands straight in the candidate's file.
Yes, that is the starting point. Who may examine, how many assessors are required, how a result is determined, when a resit is permitted and how an appeal runs are recorded per examination. If the regulations change, the institution's settings change, not the code.
Through roles per sitting, examination material that only becomes visible at the moment of administration, and a log of every access. An examiner sees only their own sitting; a member of the training provider's staff cannot see the examination. This is built in, not merely agreed.
Yes, through a register that shows only whether a certificate number is valid and until when. The rest of the record remains protected. You decide what the register displays and who can access it.
Yes. The examiner uses a tablet on site, even without a connection, and the assessment syncs as soon as coverage returns. Venue scheduling and examiner travel times are part of the session planning.
Yes, while keeping training and examination separate. The training administration supplies the candidate and admission details; the examination administration returns the result. What the training provider sees of an examination is a choice you make, and we enforce it.
Your examination administration, from registration through to the register?
Tell us which examinations you administer and where the administration currently falls short. We will review your regulations with you and show what an app concretely delivers in your situation.
