Define your requirements before you talk to suppliers
A demo shows what a system can do well. A requirements list shows whether it can do what you need. Answer eight questions below; you will receive a list in your own words that you can send to every supplier, so you can compare their answers to the same questions.

Three questions that never come up in a demo
Can I get my data back out? Ask for a sample export of a complete record, in a format you can read without that supplier. And ask what it costs. The answer determines how free you will be in five years' time.
What does an integration cost, and who builds it? Not whether it can be done, because it always can. Rather: who does the work, at whose cost, and what happens when the other party changes something.
Does it work where care is actually given? On a phone, wearing gloves, in a basement with no signal. Ask for a demonstration on the shop floor rather than in the boardroom.
Why no brands are listed here
We build software and do not sell EHRs. A list of brand names from us would be worthless. What does help is that every supplier answers the same questions, in your own words, so the differences become visible.
