An app developer who understands the media city.

Hilversum is not an ordinary business location. At the Media Park and around the Vondellaan there is a concentration of broadcasters, production houses, and audio and post-production companies that you will not find anywhere else in the Netherlands at this density. RTL, NPO, Talpa, NOS, BNN-VARA, AVROTROS, Endemol Shine, Eyeworks, BUMA/STEMRA — they operate in a reality where broadcast slots, rights, viewing figures and advertising flows count by the hour.

We build apps for clients in that ecosystem and for the wider SME market in the Gooi region. With our base on the Westerdoksdijk in Amsterdam, we're just half an hour away from Hilversum, close enough for sprint reviews, stakeholder sessions and on-site work with your editorial, production or marketing team. We work in fixed sprints, deliver working software along the way, and keep the roadmap and planning open to you.

Our focus is on native iOS and Android development, web apps, integrations with content, advertising and broadcasting systems, and the backends that tie it all together. No template work and no off-the-shelf product licences: custom apps that fit your editorial workflow, distribution model and audience metrics.

It's a fair question why you would choose an external developer rather than your own in-house team. In many cases the answer is practical: in-house teams are usually tied to strategic roadmaps, flagship products and long-term platforms. A new pilot idea, a marketing app, an internal tool or an experimental format can then sit low on the priority list. As an external partner, we step in: you retain ownership of the direction, and we bring capacity and delivery power. Code, design and infrastructure remain yours, with no vendor lock-in on licences or platforms.

Why Hilversum has its own technology ecosystem.

The combination of public broadcasting, commercial channels, production houses, the audio industry and advertising in one place has given Hilversum a unique technical character. Unlike Amsterdam, where tech companies dominate, nearly every software project in Hilversum is embedded in a media question. Distribution, rights, viewing figures, ad allocation, talent administration, production budgets and audience data are not side issues; they are the reality.

This has practical consequences for app development. A streaming app has to withstand peak load around broadcasts of Eredivisie matches or popular programmes. A paywall implementation has to work with billing providers, subscription models and CRM. An internal app for a production company touches scheduling systems, briefings, talent contracts and post-production workflows. An advertising app for a media agency connects to DSPs, third-party data, attribution models and invoicing. The design of such an app therefore starts not with the screens, but with that reality.

The Westerdoksdijk-to-Hilversum route is one of the most frequently travelled between agencies, bureaus and their media clients. Many of our conversations with clients in the Gooi begin with "we need something the in-house team can't pick up right now" or "we want a quick pilot without a multi-year roadmap". For that type of request (bounded, urgent, but still meeting the quality expectations of a professional media organisation), we work best.

When should you choose an app developer in Hilversum?

01
Proximity

You want someone who can drop by in person

Remote-only rarely works well for an editorial team, production house or marketing department. Decision-makers want demos, briefings and review sessions on location, not just video calls.

02
Sector context

Your app touches media reality

When your app must align with broadcast schedules, rights flows, content management or advertising stacks, it helps if the builder knows that world and asks the right questions.

03
SMEs in the Gooi

You are based in Hilversum, Bussum, Laren or Naarden

An SME that wants to build an internal app, a customer app or a product innovation, but isn't looking for a tech supplier from Amsterdam or Utrecht who works remotely only.

04
Scale

Your project needs sprint discipline

You have an idea that sits somewhere between an MVP and a mature platform: not something you can simply pull together with a no-code tool, but something that can be built with focus and realism, in fixed sprints, with working deliveries.

What an app developer does in the Hilversum context.

Pillar 01

Native and cross-platform

iOS in Swift, Android in Kotlin, or cross-platform with React Native or Flutter where that is the right choice. We advise you on the trade-offs rather than defaulting to a single framework.

Pillar 02

Backends and integrations

An app is rarely just the screen. We build the back-ends and integrations with headless CMS platforms, content distribution platforms, ad servers, payments, paywall providers and analytics, so that everything works as intended.

Pillar 03

Roadmap, design and maintenance

Alongside the build, we handle product strategy, UX/UI design and ongoing maintenance. An app goes live and then needs continued care: new features, OS updates, performance work and analytics development all come with that.

Our technical profile

We work with Swift and SwiftUI for iOS, Kotlin and Jetpack Compose for Android, and React Native or Flutter for cross-platform projects. We build back-ends with Node.js, TypeScript, Python or Go, depending on the requirements around performance, ecosystem and team fit. For the data layer we choose between Postgres, MongoDB, Redis, or cloud-native options on AWS, GCP or Azure. Infrastructure, CI/CD, observability and cost-conscious hosting are standard parts of every project, not "later" concerns.

How we approach media questions

For media companies we almost always start with a brief technical due diligence of your existing stack: which CMS, which ad stack, which distribution partners, which identity platform. We build on that. We would rather not replace what already works well; we connect, add and fill gaps. That saves rework, makes it easier to place in the roadmap, and respects the choices your in-house team has already made.

Who we build for in and around Hilversum.

Our clients are not all broadcasters; the city's creative sector is broader than that. Here is a brief overview of the groups we work with in the area.

Media companies

Broadcasters, cable and streaming operators

The major broadcasters based at Media Park have their own in-house development teams, but there is regularly room for an external partner on side products, pilots or marketing apps. We think along with you at that scale.

Production houses

Endemol Shine, Eyeworks, independent producers

Independent production companies that create formats, content and programmes often need internal tools and audience-facing apps. We build these with close attention to your workflow and deadlines.

Audio and music industry

Labels, rights organisations and podcast producers

BUMA/STEMRA, Sony Music NL and the podcast scene around Hilversum have specific questions around rights administration, streaming distribution and listener engagement. We understand that context.

Advertising and post-production

Agencies, post-houses and advertising technology

Agencies running campaigns, post-production studios and adtech companies need workflow apps and client tools. We build them without vendor lock-in.

Sport & Live

NOS Sport, Eredivisie Media, event organisers

Sport and live event apps have their own demands: low data latency, real-time push and scalability at peak moments. We have the architecture and working model to deliver apps of this kind.

SMEs in the Gooi

Hilversum, Bussum, Laren, Naarden, Weesp

Not all questions come from media. The Gooi region has a strong base of SMEs in healthcare, services, retail and specialist manufacturing. For them we build customer-facing apps, internal tools and custom integrations.

Education & Arts

HKU, conservatoire, training institutes

Educational institutions around Hilversum have specific questions about learning environments, practice materials, recording archives and assessment. We build fitting apps that respect the pedagogical approach and handle data with care.

Rights & Collective Organisations

BUMA/STEMRA, Sena, rights management organisations

Rights organisations have complex administration and royalty distribution flows, member portals and datasets that interact closely with technology. We help build apps of this kind without disrupting your existing systems.

Don't see your type of organisation listed? No problem. Our clients go well beyond media — construction, retail, business services and specialist SMEs are equally well represented. For clients outside Hilversum we also have location-specific pages, for example app developer Amsterdam or the general location overview page.

Travel distance and working model.

From Westerdoksdijk 599 in Amsterdam, it's half an hour by car to Hilversum via the A1 or A2. By train from Amsterdam Centraal or Amsterdam Sloterdijk, you'll reach Hilversum Centraal or Hilversum Mediapark in a similar time, often with direct services. In practice, we can be with you just as quickly as with a client in Amsterdam South-East or the Zuidas.

Our working model is hybrid on-site: we regularly come to your location for sprint ceremonies, design reviews, stakeholder sessions and joint working sessions, and in between we hold stand-ups, code reviews and development work from Amsterdam. For some clients a fixed weekly on-site slot works best; for others, periodic presence is enough. In every case, you are not "a client at a distance" — we know your team, your workspace and your stakeholders.

For long-term projects we often arrange a fixed on-site meeting every two weeks at your office. For shorter pilots and MVP projects it can be different: during discovery we are more often with you, and delivery then takes place more remotely. We make this arrangement clear upfront — no surprises about the working model midway through a project.

Frequently asked questions about app development in Hilversum.

Do you have experience with broadcasters and media companies?
Yes. Our experience with content management, paywalls, streaming, advertising stacks and editorial flows comes directly from projects for media and broadcasting clients. We know that the reality of a broadcaster or production house differs from that of a retailer or SaaS start-up: broadcast slots, rights and viewing figures aren't constraints, they are the basic parameters of your business. We know the difference between an advertising stack built on direct deals and one built on programmatic, between a metered and a hard paywall, and between a streaming product that has to be live and one that is on-demand. A short introductory call is the quickest way to gauge whether we fit your specific question, and it's faster than a long quote round.
How often do you come to Hilversum during a project?
We aim to be on site at least once per sprint for review and planning, and more often when the phase calls for it, such as during discovery, design reviews or go-live. For close collaboration with an editorial or production team, being regularly on location almost always works better. Our base in Amsterdam is about thirty minutes away, so we're flexible. Beyond that, we work remotely for stand-ups, review calls and shared documents. On longer projects we often schedule fixed check-ins at your office, which gives your team and ours the steadiness of a set rhythm. For clients at the Media Park, we know the routes and access arrangements, so there's no delay there.
How much does it cost to have an app developed through Appfront?
An app project begins with scoping: what we build, for which platforms, with which integrations, and at what pace. We base a sprint plan and a concrete budget on that. We don't quote "from" prices, as they give a misleading picture, since a media streaming app is fundamentally different from an internal service app. A no-obligation half-hour introductory call is enough to set a initial direction; email Fabian at fabian.vandijk@appfront.nl or book a conversation via the contact page.
How long does it take to build an app?
It depends heavily on scope. A well-defined MVP, such as a first public app or an internal tool, is ready within a few sprints. Full platforms with multiple apps, backends and integrations require a multi-sprint project built up in phases. What always applies is that you receive something working at the end of each sprint, not a PowerPoint update. Many clients value this rhythm because their own stakeholders can look along and steer as they go, rather than only seeing what has been built at handover. We would rather deliver a working beta than a polished demo.
What if our project at the Media Park falls under an NDA or strict rights regime?
No problem. We regularly work under strict NDAs, including on rights- and talent-sensitive projects. We handle this on our side with team-level NDAs, restricted data access and secure development environments. For clients where compliance and information security have a formal framework, we can work through the usual questionnaires and audits. At your request, we can also carry out work entirely on your infrastructure, so that code and data never touch our development machines.
Do you build native (iOS, Android) or cross-platform?
Both, depending on your needs. For an app where audio streaming, video DRM, push notifications or platform-specific features are central, we often choose native. For business tools where functionality matters more than performance edge cases, React Native or Flutter work well and are quicker to build with a single codebase. We don't advise in advance; we decide once we understand what you want and who it's for. In some cases we choose a hybrid approach: native for the critical edge features, cross-platform for the shared screens. That requires a bit more architectural work but gives you the best of both worlds.
How does a project actually run?
First, an introductory conversation. Then a short discovery phase in which we make scope, target audience, technology and planning concrete. Sprints, usually two weeks long, then start, in which we deliver working parts, give demos and plan together. We work from a shared backlog and keep the roadmap open. After go-live, maintenance and further development follow by arrangement, with the same sprint cadence. Beforehand we make clear what is and isn't included in each phase, so expectations align on both sides. You can read more about our way of working on the location hub and on the general app development page.
Do you also work with clients in Amsterdam and the surrounding area?
Yes, that's our home base. Many projects started from client requests in Amsterdam and then extended to surrounding regions. For example, see the Amsterdam page for clients in the capital. For the Gooi region and Hilversum specifically, this page is the starting point.
Can you also do just the design, or just the backend?
Yes. Some clients already have a design team and only want the build, while others want a UX project as a separate step before development begins. We also run projects where we only build or modernise the backend, for example when your front-end team is already set up with a new app design and you need a reliable API layer or a headless CMS integration. We have no all-or-nothing ideology; we adapt to what you need.
What sets you apart from a large app agency or an offshore partner?
Scale and involvement. We are small and selective about our engagements: we say "no" when a request isn't a good fit, and "yes" with conviction when it is. For clients in Hilversum, that means you get a fixed team that knows your context, rather than a changing line-up every sprint. At the same time, there's no sales-and-project-manager layer in between; you speak directly with the people building your app. For most clients in media and SMEs, that is the right size.
