Custom Wegiz integration development
Appfront builds integrations for healthcare providers and software vendors that must comply with the Wegiz, the Dutch Electronic Data Exchange in Healthcare Act. The Act designates, decision by decision, the data exchanges that must take place electronically, and for some of them requires use of a NEN standard with certified software. We map which exchanges apply to you, build them to the standard, and make sure your system is ready for certification.
What is an integration for the Wegiz?
The Electronic Data Exchange in Healthcare Act, the Wegiz, is a framework act. By decree, data exchanges are designated that must take place electronically, such as medication transfer and the transfer of a patient's basic records. For some of these, more applies: the exchange must follow a NEN standard for language and technology, and the software used must be certified. Healthcare providers must then work with certified software.
For software vendors, this means implementing the standard for each designated exchange and preparing for certification. Healthcare providers with their own systems or integrations face the same requirement. You can follow when each decision takes effect through the government; the first decision was expected before 2026. If in doubt, consult your adviser or industry body.
In practice, a separate integration is built for each exchange, each with its own approach to security, logging and error handling. That makes every new exchange a new project. We build custom integrations using one approach: the same foundation for all exchanges, and for each exchange the standard that applies. The standards and specifications are maintained by others; we make sure your system works with them.
In line with the standard
For each designated exchange, the information standard and the NEN standard, built and tested.
Ready for certification
Your software prepared for the certification that applies to an exchange.
One approach
The same foundation for security, logging and errors, so the next exchange goes faster.
How we build your Wegiz integration
We start with your situation: whether you are a supplier or a care provider, which exchanges you currently carry out, which systems you use, and which decisions affect you. From that we produce an overview, with what is needed for each exchange. That way you know where you stand and can plan in the order in which the decisions take effect.
Your role, exchanges, systems and the decisions that affect you.
Information standard and NEN standard for each exchange, on one foundation.
Testing with chain partners, and preparation for certification.
Go-live, monitoring, and management as new decisions and versions arrive.
What a Wegiz integration does in practice
The components below come up in almost every Wegiz project. Which ones you need depends on your role.
Overview
Which exchanges apply to you.
Standards
Information standard and NEN standard for each exchange.
Basic
One approach to security and logging.
Testing
With chain partners and test environments.
Certification
Your software prepared for the test.
Audit log
Every exchange logged.
Who we build a Wegiz integration for
The integration is intended for anyone who must exchange data under the Wegiz or supplies software for doing so.
Software suppliers
A product that must be certified. The standard is the core.
Hospitals
Many exchanges at once. The foundation matters most.
Long-term care
Your own systems alongside packaged software. The overview is what is needed.
Collaborations
Exchange for multiple providers. One approach is the core.
Technology and integrations
This page covers the Wegiz as a whole. For medication, see our page on a medication transfer integration; for a patient's basic health data, our page on a BgZ integration; and for the building blocks underlying the standards, our page on a zibs integration. You can read about our way of working under building software.
Why Appfront for your Wegiz integration?
A separate integration for each exchange turns every new decision into a new project. We build on a different principle: every exchange to the standard, ready for certification, and one approach for everything.
Overview
Knowing which decisions affect you.
Done
To the standard, prepared for certification.
Faster
The next exchange on the same foundation.
Security and privacy for a Wegiz integration
The integration processes medical data, which is particularly sensitive. Only data for which there is a legal basis or consent is exchanged, connections are encrypted, and every exchange is logged.
The integration runs in a European data centre or in your own environment, with encrypted storage, daily backups and strict role-based access.
Frequently asked questions about a Wegiz integration
Questions care organisations ask before getting started.
The Electronic Data Exchange in Healthcare Act (Wet elektronische gegevensuitwisseling in de zorg). It is a framework law: for each decision, data exchanges are designated that must take place electronically and, for some of them, follow a NEN standard using certified software.
The law works with a list of exchanges that are designated step by step, such as medication transfer and a patient's basic data. Which apply to you and when, you follow via the government and your sector organisation; in the first step we map that out for you.
For exchanges where it has been set, the software used for them must be tested against the NEN standard. Suppliers have their software certified, and care providers must work with certified software. We prepare your software for that.
Both. Vendors must build the standard into their product and have it certified. Healthcare providers with their own systems or integrations face the same obligation, and healthcare providers using packaged products need to know whether their vendor will be ready in time.
Because every exchange needs the same foundation: security, identification, logging, error handling and connection to the chain. Once that foundation is right, each subsequent exchange is mainly about implementing the standard.
In maintenance, we track new decisions and versions. We show what changes for your system and adapt the integration so you remain compliant on time.
For software vendors who need their product certified, and for healthcare providers with their own systems or integrations that do not run through a certified package.
Do you know where you stand with the Wegiz?
Tell us whether you are a vendor or a healthcare provider, which exchanges you currently carry out and with which systems. We will map what you need and show you what the integration would look like.
