Custom UWLR integration development

Appfront builds UWLR integrations for suppliers of digital learning materials, testing and practice platforms, and other education applications. UWLR, the Uitwisseling Leerlinggegevens en Resultaten (Exchange of Pupil Data and Results), is the Edustandaard agreement that governs how pupil data passes from the school's pupil administration to an application, and how results, for example from methodology tests, return to the school's pupil monitoring system. We build the integration that supports both directions, in line with the standard and with no more data than necessary.

What is a UWLR integration?

Schools use digital course materials, tests and practice platforms alongside their pupil administration and pupil tracking systems. UWLR, the Uitwisseling Leerlinggegevens en Resultaten (Exchange of Pupil Data and Results), is the Edustandaard agreement that allows these systems to exchange data: pupil data flows to the application, and results, for example from course-book tests, return automatically to the pupil tracking system. Pupil data is exchanged in the EDEXML format, among others.

Without an integration, a teacher has to enter results from a digital test into the pupil monitoring system by hand, or the results stay in the application where the learning support coordinator cannot see them. Pupils are added to the application manually. A supplier serving many schools receives queries about data that does not match the school's administration.

We build custom software because the integration has to fit your application and the schools you serve: which data you need, which results you send back and in what form, which pupil administration and pupil monitoring systems your schools use, and which version of the standard applies. The standard is fixed; how your application works with it is the work. We test with the systems your schools use, so that results appear as soon as a school is connected.

Pupil data in

Pupils and groups from the school's pupil administration, following the UWLR agreements.

Results back

Test and exercise results automatically in the pupil tracking system, where teachers and learning support coordinators can see them.

Only what is needed

No more data than the application requires, in line with the GDPR and the agreements in education.

How we build your UWLR integration

We start with your application: which data you need, which results you want to send back, and how that works today.

1
Mapping your application and schools

Your application, the data and results, the systems of your schools, and the version of the standard.

2
Retrieving pupil data

Pupils and groups from the pupil administration, linked to your application.

3
Sending results back

Test and exercise results in the standard's format to the pupil tracking system.

4
Testing and maintenance

Testing with school systems, going live per school, and maintenance when new versions arrive.

What a UWLR integration actually does

The components below appear in almost every UWLR integration. Which ones you need depends on your application.

Pupil data

Pupils, groups and teachers from the pupil administration, according to the standard.

Outcomes

Test and exercise results returned to the pupil tracking system.

Pupil integration

Pupils in your application linked to those in the school's administration.

Versions

Support for the version of the standard that schools and suppliers use.

Minimisation

Only the data that is needed, and not kept longer than necessary.

Audit log

A record, per exchange, of what was retrieved or sent back, and with what result.

Who we build UWLR integrations for

The integration is intended for applications that exchange pupil data and results with schools.

Publishers of course materials

Digital course-book tests. Results back to the tracking system are the core.

Practice platforms

Many exercises per pupil. Pupil integration matters most.

Assessment platforms

Tests outside the course book. Results in the correct format are what is needed.

New education apps

An application for schools to connect to. Standards and data minimisation are at its core.

Technology and integrations

This page is about UWLR. For the EDEXML data exchange format, see our page on EDEXML integration, and for integrations with pupil administration systems, see our pages on a ParnasSys integration and an ESIS integration. You can read about our way of working under building software.

Why choose Appfront for your UWLR integration?

A result that stays inside the application is invisible to the school's pastoral coordinator. That is why we build for results that flow automatically into the pupil tracking system, pupils that match correctly, and no more data than necessary.

No manual re-entry for teachers

Results flow automatically into the pupil tracking system.

Pupils match correctly

Pupils and groups come from the school's administration.

Privacy under control

Only the data that is needed, in line with the standard and agreements.

Security and privacy in a UWLR integration

The integration processes data and results of pupils, often minors. Only what is necessary is exchanged and stored. Schools and suppliers set out their arrangements in a data processing agreement; in education, there are also additional rules on privacy for digital learning tools.

The integration runs in a European data centre, with encrypted storage, daily backups and a log of every exchange.

Frequently asked questions about a UWLR integration

Questions that education software suppliers ask before starting.

The Uitwisseling Leerlinggegevens en Resultaten (Exchange of Pupil Data and Results) is an agreement by Edustandaard that moves pupil data from the pupil administration system to an application, and results, for example from curriculum tests, back to the pupil tracking system.

EDEXML is the format for pupil, group and teacher data. UWLR is the agreement governing the exchange of data and results, and EDEXML is used as one of its formats. We have a separate page on EDEXML on this site.

The version your schools and their pupil tracking systems use. Several versions are in circulation; we will establish which one you need in the first step.

Results from tests and exercises in the form the standard prescribes, so the pupil tracking system can display them. Which results are returned depends on what your application produces.

Only the data the application needs is retrieved and stored. You record what you agree with schools in a data processing agreement.

Schools usually grant permission for the exchange with your application within their own system. We take the process for each system into account in the guidance for schools.

To suppliers of digital learning materials and education applications that want to return results to pupil tracking systems, or retrieve pupil data without manual work for schools.

Results flow automatically into the school's pupil tracking system?

Tell us what your application does, which results you have and which schools you serve. We will show you what the integration would look like.
