E-commerce Behavioural flows Predictive analytics

Custom Klaviyo integration development

Appfront builds custom Klaviyo integrations for e-commerce brands and D2C businesses on Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce and headless storefronts. Using the Klaviyo API v3 (Track API, Profile API, List API and Catalog API), we connect your webshop, back office and ERP to Klaviyo, so behavioural flows, real-time segmentation and predictive analytics run on live data from your own systems.

What is a Klaviyo integration?

Klaviyo is a customer data and marketing platform built for e-commerce, with native models for products, orders and webshop events. What sets it apart from generic email tools is that Klaviyo treats every customer profile as a rich data record, with purchase history, behavioural events (Viewed Product, Added to Cart, Started Checkout), CLV prediction and churn risk built in. As a result, segmentation, flows and SMS campaigns work directly on real-time webshop data rather than on a static import.

A custom Klaviyo integration goes well beyond the standard Shopify app. In practice, that means: connecting the Klaviyo API v3 to your webshop and to your back office, ERP or CDP; firing Track API events from your own backend so that server-side actions (returns, replenishments, subscription renewals) can trigger flows; synchronising the Catalog API for product blocks in emails; using the List & Segment API to build dynamic audiences based on real-time event data; and setting up the Klaviyo onsite tracker (klaviyo.js) for Active on Site, browse abandonment and double opt-in via opt-in forms, with strict separation of Public and Private API keys.

Appfront builds in line with the official Klaviyo developer documentation and the OWASP ASVS security standard. We align the event schema, profile model and suppression logic with your actual webshop data, so the integration grows with your catalogue and range, including during peak volumes around Black Friday, product launches or international rollouts into new markets with separate Klaviyo accounts.

Behavioural flows

Klaviyo flows trigger on real-time events: cart abandonment within one hour, browse abandonment, post-purchase upsell, win-back after X days of inactivity, replenishment based on the expected next-order date. Multi-step, with split paths based on behaviour rather than the calendar.

Real-time segmentation

Segments update themselves on incoming events: "purchased in the last 30 days, did not open the last email, CLV > X". Unlike static lists, a customer moves automatically as their behaviour changes, with no cron jobs or nightly imports.

Predictive analytics

Klaviyo predicts per profile: Customer Lifetime Value, expected next-order date, churn risk and average time between orders. These can be used directly as segment conditions or as merge tags in emails, without building your own ML pipeline.

Our development process for Klaviyo integrations

We work to a proven methodology that removes uncertainty early and delivers a stable integration. From an initial analysis of your e-commerce platform, customer data and flow architecture through to go-live and ongoing management, every step is aimed at an integration your marketing and developer teams can understand, measure and keep developing.

1
Analysis & scope

We map out which e-commerce platform you run (Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, headless), which events you already fire, how your back office and ERP relate to Klaviyo, and which flows and segments should deliver business impact.

2
Architecture

We design the event schema (which metadata accompanies each event), the profile attribute strategy, segment definitions, flow triggers, and the separation between Public and Private API keys before the first production event is fired.

3
Development

Implementation with automated tests, structured logging and monitoring. You see working builds along the way.

4
Go-live & management

Controlled go-live with data validation and a safety net, followed by ongoing management and further development.

What a Klaviyo integration delivers in practice

Every Klaviyo integration is set up specifically for your e-commerce platform, customer data and flow architecture. Below are the features we most often deliver for brands that use Klaviyo as their central customer data and email/SMS engine.

Cart and browse abandonment flows

Started Checkout and Viewed Product events are fired via the Track API; the Klaviyo flow then sends reminder emails or SMS after 1, 4 and 24 hours, with the actual products from the Cart event shown as dynamic blocks. Often the first flow with measurable revenue impact.

Post-purchase and win-back

Placed Order and Fulfilled Order events trigger an onboarding flow (shipping confirmation, usage tips, review request), followed by cross-sell based on recent purchases and a win-back flow once Klaviyo's churn risk score passes a threshold.

VIP tiers and CLV segments

Real-time segments based on Klaviyo's predictive Customer Lifetime Value: the top 10% receive early access, exclusive previews or free shipping, while lower-value segments receive activation incentives. Segments update automatically as new orders and events come in.

SMS and email orchestration

Klaviyo combines email and SMS in a single flow: the first cart abandonment touch goes by email, a second by SMS for high order values. With strict consent tracking in line with TCPA and GDPR, suppression of non-marketable contacts and respect for channel-specific timing windows.

Deliverability and suppression

Klaviyo's deliverability score per account, automatic suppression of bounced and unengaged profiles, double opt-in on forms, and DKIM, SPF and DMARC on your sending domain. This is crucial because Klaviyo bills per active profile, so untidy lists are expensive.

Catalogue API and product feed

The Catalogue API keeps product data in sync so that dynamic blocks (cross-sell based on recent purchases, lookalikes based on browsing history) work with live prices, stock levels and URLs. Syncs from Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento or a custom PIM system.

Typical use cases in practice

A Klaviyo integration looks different depending on the organisation. We regularly see a number of patterns among e-commerce brands, and for each we have a working setup that pays close attention to the event schema, segment architecture and the right mix of flows, campaigns and SMS.

CRM

Shopify and Shopify Plus brands

D2C brands on Shopify or Shopify Plus that extend the standard app with a custom event layer from their headless storefront, back office or subscription app. Klaviyo becomes the heart of the customer journey, with flows, segments and SMS all running on live data. Pairs well with our Shopify API integration.

WooCommerce and Magento

WooCommerce and Magento shops where the standard plugin hits its limits: custom events from your own ERP, multi-store with separate accounts, multi-currency with separate sending domains, or complex attributes for B2B segmentation. We build server-side via the Klaviyo API v3, not via brittle plugin glue.

Headless and composable commerce

Headless storefronts (Next.js, Remix, Nuxt) on BigCommerce, commercetools or Salesforce Commerce Cloud, where Klaviyo is fed via server events from the backend. Browse tracking via klaviyo.js, and Server-Side Track for checkout and orders. Fits well with our headless commerce development.

Subscription and replenishment

Brands with subscriptions, subscription boxes or replenishment models, where churn prevention is the key. Klaviyo's churn-risk score triggers proactive win-back emails; the expected next-order date triggers replenishment reminders. Works well for coffee, supplement and cosmetics brands.

Technology we use

We build Klaviyo integrations with the official Klaviyo API v3 at api.klaviyo.com, combined with the right mix of klaviyo.js on the frontend, server-side events from your backend, and direct integrations from your e-commerce platform. The exact choice depends on your stack and customer data architecture, so that your own team can manage and further develop the implementation.

Why choose Appfront for your Klaviyo integration?

Appfront has extensive experience building API integrations for a wide range of organisations in the Netherlands. We always start with a thorough analysis of your existing systems and processes. An integration should not only work technically, but also add practical value to the way you work.

For every integration, we write clear documentation and make sure your own team, or any future supplier, can understand and manage it. No black box, just transparent code and clear agreements on monitoring, alerting and maintenance.

You work with a dedicated point of contact who understands both the technical and the functional side. This keeps communication short, prevents misunderstandings and speeds up decisions when choices need to be made during development.

Security and privacy in Klaviyo integrations

A Klaviyo profile contains a lot of personal data: email address, phone number, purchase history, browsing behaviour, predicted CLV and churn-risk scores. Appfront builds in line with Klaviyo's own security recommendations and the OWASP ASVS. That means: private API keys stored in secure vaults and never in client-side code, public keys scoped with as few privileges as possible, double opt-in on all forms, explicit consent for SMS in line with TCPA and GDPR, and strict separation between test and production accounts.

Klaviyo is SOC 2 Type II accredited and hosts primarily in the US on AWS. EU data residency is available for EU customers through account configuration; verify this for each new tenant. GDPR support runs through a DPA with Standard Contractual Clauses for cross-border data transfers. For organisations with a strict EU-only requirement, we honestly recommend an EU-hosted alternative such as Spotler or Brevo. Where Klaviyo is a good fit, we help you draw up a DPIA and build DSAR flows using the Profile API (export and delete) so you can demonstrably comply with the GDPR.

More on our security approach: information security policy and CVD policy.

  • GDPR-compliant data processing and data minimisation
  • Encryption in transit (TLS 1.2+) and at rest
  • Role-based access and least-privilege principles
  • Audit logs with traceable data flows
  • Automatic retries and dead-letter queues
  • Monitoring and alerting for anomalies
  • Secrets management in line with best practice
  • Documentation for your record of processing activities

Frequently asked questions about Klaviyo integrations

Answers to the questions we get asked most often about Klaviyo implementations.

A Klaviyo integration is a technical integration between Klaviyo and your e-commerce environment (Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, Salesforce Commerce Cloud or a headless setup) and, optionally, your back office, ERP or CDP. Via the Klaviyo API v3 (Track API for events, Profile API for customer data, List & Segment API for audiences, Catalog API for products), customer profiles, behavioural events (Viewed Product, Started Checkout, Placed Order) and order history are synchronised in real time, so that behavioural flows, segmentation and predictive analytics work directly on live data.

Klaviyo was built from the ground up for e-commerce, with native data models for products, orders and webshop events, and out-of-the-box predictive analytics such as Customer Lifetime Value, churn risk and expected next-order date. Mailchimp is more generic and historically stronger in B2B and SMB newsletters. SendGrid is primarily a transactional email API without serious marketing automation. Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) is an EU-hosted all-in-one suite, often a match for organisations with strict EU data residency requirements, whereas Klaviyo hosts in the US. The right choice depends on your e-commerce data, your automation complexity and your privacy requirements.

We work with Klaviyo API v3 (REST, base path api.klaviyo.com): the Track API for server-side events (Started Checkout, Placed Order, Fulfilled Order), the Identify API for profile updates, the Profile API for lookups and suppressions, the List & Segment API for audiences, the Catalogue API for product feeds and cross-sell blocks, and Server Events for server-side triggers from your own back end. On the webshop itself we use Klaviyo Onsite (klaviyo.js) for browse tracking, Active on Site, opt-in forms with double opt-in and Klaviyo Forms. Authentication uses a Public Key (front end) and a Private API Key (server side), kept strictly separate.

A standard Shopify or WooCommerce integration with the official Klaviyo app, a handful of flows (welcome, browse abandonment, cart abandonment, post-purchase, win-back) and basic segmentation can go live within a few weeks. Custom integrations with a headless storefront, custom back office, ERP integration, multi-store or multi-currency with separate Klaviyo accounts, or complex consent and suppression logic usually take more time. After an intake conversation in which we go through the e-commerce stack, data flows and flow architecture, we give you a realistic estimate.

Klaviyo charges per active profile and per email or SMS sent, so an unchecked sync can quickly inflate your bill. We therefore build selective sync logic: only marketable contacts (with consent), suppression of bouncers and of unengaged profiles after a configurable period, and filtering of test or internal domain addresses. For SMS we implement strict consent tracking in line with TCPA and GDPR. During a migration or platform switch, we help set up the Klaviyo account cleanly, using a sandbox account for flow testing before production traffic is directed to it.

Klaviyo is a US provider whose hosting is based in the US (AWS). EU data residency is offered for EU customers through account configuration, so verify this for each new tenant. Klaviyo provides a DPA with Standard Contractual Clauses for cross-border data transfers and is SOC 2 Type II certified. Appfront builds to the OWASP ASVS: Private API Keys kept in secure vaults, scoped Public Keys on the front end, double opt-in on forms, Consent Mode integration with your cookie banner, and correct data subject access request flows (Profile API endpoints to export or delete data). For organisations with a strict EU-only requirement, we honestly recommend an EU-hosted alternative such as Spotler or Brevo.

Yes. We regularly take over the management of existing Klaviyo integrations, even if they were originally set up via the standard Shopify app or by another party. We audit API keys and their scopes, the event implementation (which events are fired where, with which metadata), suppression and bounce logic, segment definitions (real-time versus static), flow triggers, deliverability score, and the integration between your webshop and back office. We then document the current situation and draw up improvement proposals, often with a direct revenue impact through better segmentation or new flows.

Klaviyo is best suited to e-commerce brands and D2C businesses with serious webshop volumes and a focus on customer lifecycle marketing, typically on Shopify, Shopify Plus, WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce or a headless setup. The scale at which predictive analytics become worthwhile is often 10,000+ customers or 50,000+ events per day. It is less suitable for B2B businesses without a clear webshop context (consider ActiveCampaign or HubSpot), pure transactional email (Postmark or Flowmailer), or organisations with a strict EU-only data residency requirement (Spotler or Brevo).
