From classroom to scalable digital learning

Organisations investing in an e-learning platform choose a structured way to distribute knowledge, regardless of location, time zone or group size. Where classroom training scales linearly with the number of trainers and locations, a web-based learning platform can deliver the same quality learning experience to hundreds or thousands of participants at once.

An e-learning platform is, however, more than video hosting with a quiz attached. A professional platform coordinates the entire learning cycle: from instructors creating and structuring course material, through assigning learning paths to specific audiences, to tracking progress and generating certificates when a participant meets the requirements. Administrators see at platform level which teams are falling behind, instructors see which content isn't landing, and learners see on their own dashboard exactly what they have completed and what remains.

This is fundamentally different from a native mobile app for e-learning or a standalone LMS software package. A web platform gives you the flexibility of a browser-based interface — it works on desktop, tablet and smartphone without installation — while you retain full control over data, branding and integrations. See also our offering for an e-learning app for iOS and Android if mobile-first is the priority, or custom LMS software for organisations with highly complex management structures.

When a custom platform is the right choice

Off-the-shelf LMS solutions such as TalentLMS, Docebo or Moodle offer a quick start, but they reach their limits when your organisation requires non-standard role structures, specific integration requirements or its own brand identity. A custom-built solution is worth considering when:

  • You want to serve multiple clients or divisions on the same platform (multi-tenant)
  • Your HR system or identity provider requires a direct integration
  • You want to offer the platform to clients as a white-label product
  • Your reporting requirements go beyond standard LMS dashboards
  • You have data sovereignty or specific GDPR compliance requirements

What we build

Appfront develops e-learning platforms as full web applications — not a plugin on a CMS, nor a hosted SaaS with limited customisability, but a platform that is entirely yours and runs on your infrastructure. We work closely with your content team and stakeholders to ensure the architecture reflects how your organisation actually learns and reports. You can read more about our approach on our services page and in our custom software development section.

Core functionality of a professional learning platform

A good e-learning platform is built up of three concentric layers: content management for instructors and administrators, a learning experience layer for participants, and an analytics layer for reporting and steering. Below are the most requested features per layer.

Content management

Course management and learning paths

Instructors and content managers can build courses from a variety of content blocks: video lessons, text modules, downloadable documents, embedded presentations and interactive assessments. Courses can be grouped into learning paths — ordered sequences in which completing module A is a prerequisite for accessing module B. This enables adaptive learning journeys in which the learner's progress determines the content available. SCORM packages are imported as ready-made modules; xAPI statements are received and stored in a Learning Record Store (LRS).

  • Drag-and-drop course building
  • SCORM 1.2 & 2004 import
  • xAPI / Tin Can support
  • Conditional learning paths
  • Certificate generation on completion
Analytics

Progress tracking and analytics

Every interaction a learner has with the platform — starting a module, answering a quiz question, pausing a video — is recorded and translated into insightful dashboards. At organisation and team level, administrators see which courses are being followed, what the average completion rate is and where participants drop off. Per course, instructors see how learners perform on individual questions and can adjust content accordingly. Compliance officers can export reports as evidence of mandatory training or certification.

  • Real-time progress dashboards per role
  • Completion rate per module and course
  • Quiz results and answer analysis
  • Exportable compliance reports (PDF/CSV)
  • Email notifications for expiring certificates
Users

User management and roles

A multi-stakeholder platform requires a carefully considered roles and permissions model. We typically implement at least four roles: the platform administrator with full access, the instructor who creates and manages courses for their own group, the learner who consumes learning content, and — in a multi-tenant architecture — the tenant administrator who manages their own organisation's environment. Roles can be refined with granular permissions: may an instructor also invite users? May a learner export their own progress report? We discuss these kinds of questions during the architecture phase.

  • Configurable roles and permissions model
  • Group and department structures
  • Bulk import via CSV or HR system
  • Self-registration with an approval workflow
  • Multi-tenant isolation per organisation

Integrations and technical architecture

An e-learning platform rarely stands alone. Organisations expect it to work seamlessly with their existing identity management, HR administration, communication tools and payment systems. We build on a REST API-first architecture that makes integration with virtually any external system possible.

Identity

SSO and identity management

Single Sign-On (SSO) via SAML 2.0 or OAuth2/OpenID Connect lets users log in to the learning platform with their existing work account, without remembering a separate password. We support integrations with Azure Active Directory / Entra ID, Okta, Google Workspace and other SAML-compatible identity providers. Automatic user provisioning via SCIM ensures new employees are assigned the right learning path as soon as they are created in the HR system.

HR systems

Integration with HR and personnel systems

Automatic synchronisation of employee data prevents manual work and errors. Through our API integration services, we connect your learning platform to widely used HR systems such as AFAS, Visma, Exact HR, SAP SuccessFactors or Microsoft Dynamics. When an employee changes role in the HR system, their learning paths and permissions are updated on the platform automatically. When someone leaves the organisation, their accounts are deactivated automatically.

Content standards

SCORM, xAPI and content libraries

The SCORM standard has been the de facto norm for reusable e-learning content for many years. We build a full SCORM 1.2 and 2004 runtime into the platform so you can import and use existing modules — created in Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate or iSpring — straight away. Alongside SCORM, we support the xAPI specification (Tin Can API) for advanced tracking of learning activities that take place outside the browser, such as simulated tasks, field training or gamified learning modules.

Video and payments

Video streaming and payment integrations

For platforms that offer video content, we set up a robust video hosting integration via Vimeo OTT, AWS Elemental MediaConvert or similar services. This makes videos available faster in the right quality for each connection, protects them against unauthorised downloading, and manages bandwidth efficiently. For commercial learning platforms, such as training providers or open enrolment, we integrate payment platforms like Mollie, Stripe or iDEAL directly into the enrolment flow.

The organisations for which we build e-learning platforms

E-learning platforms are not reserved for large educational institutions. Demand for scalable, measurable learning is growing across a wide range of sectors. Below are the organisation types for which we most often build a platform, each with their own typical requirements.

Training agencies and course providers

Organisations that offer training to external clients need a white-label platform: your own domain name, your own branding, and your clients see your brand, not the name of the underlying system. A payment module is also essential for open enrolments, along with a multi-tenant structure so that each client company gets its own secure environment with its own users, courses and reports.

  • White-label and custom domains per tenant
  • Paid enrolments and coupon codes
  • Client-specific reporting
  • Scalable to dozens of tenants

Corporates and large organisations

Large organisations with their own L&D (Learning & Development) departments look for a platform that integrates seamlessly with their existing IT landscape. Integration with the identity provider (Azure AD, Okta) tops the wish list, followed by integration with the HR system for automatic onboarding and role-based course assignment. Compliance training with mandatory refresher frequency and automatic reminders is a standard requirement in sectors such as finance, healthcare and industry. Detailed role hierarchies, by business unit, country or team, are needed to serve large organisations without local administrators receiving platform-wide rights.

Industry bodies and membership platforms

Industry bodies, professional associations and certification institutes use e-learning platforms to facilitate continuing professional development (CPD) and to safeguard certifications. Members log in via the existing membership administration, complete mandatory or optional modules, and receive CPD points that are recorded on their profile. The platform integrates with the membership register so that CPD registration and membership renewal can take place in the same flow. We also build AI-driven recommendation engines that suggest relevant further training to members based on their role, region and previously completed education.

Technology stack and architectural choices

Choosing the right technology stack determines how well the platform scales, is maintained and can be extended in the long term. We are stack-agnostic, but have proven preferences based on the requirements of learning platforms.

Front-end and user experience

For the front-end of e-learning platforms we most often opt for React or Next.js. React offers a component-based architecture that suits the recurring UI patterns of a learning platform perfectly: course cards, progress indicators, quiz interfaces. Next.js adds server-side rendering, which improves initial load times and is SEO-friendly for public course catalogues. For styling we work with Tailwind CSS or a custom-built design system library that consistently follows your brand identity throughout the platform.

  • React / Next.js for component-rich interfaces
  • TypeScript for type safety and code quality
  • Responsive design: works on desktop, tablet and mobile
  • Accessibility compliant with WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines

Back-end and API layer

The back-end logic (user authentication, course distribution, progress storage, certificate generation) runs on Node.js or Python (FastAPI), depending on the specific requirements. We build a RESTful or GraphQL API that serves both our own front end and enables integrations with external systems. All API endpoints are documented via OpenAPI/Swagger so that your own developers or external parties can integrate easily.

Data storage and scalability

PostgreSQL is our primary database for relational data: users, roles, course structure, enrolments and progress data. For session management and caching of frequently accessed data, such as course catalogues and user profiles, we use Redis, which significantly reduces response times for learners during peak periods. xAPI statements are stored in a Learning Record Store (LRS), an optimised data store for event-based learning data that can be queried efficiently for analytics purposes.

  • PostgreSQL for core relational data
  • Redis for caching and session management
  • Object storage (AWS S3, Azure Blob) for media
  • LRS for xAPI events

Hosting, cloud and deployment

We deploy on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, depending on your preference and existing cloud contracts. Containerisation with Docker and orchestration with Kubernetes ensure the platform scales horizontally when large numbers of learners are active at the same time. CI/CD pipelines with automated tests enable safe, frequent updates without downtime. We also set up monitoring so that you are alerted proactively when performance issues arise.

Why choose Appfront as your platform partner

Building an e-learning platform is a serious investment that calls for a development partner who understands both the technical and the content complexity.

Platform thinking, not feature thinking

We do not start with a list of features but with an architecture analysis: who are the stakeholders, what does the content flow look like, which integrations are required, and how will the platform grow over the coming years? By answering these questions early, we avoid costly restructuring later. Our experience with web applications and custom software means we know how to balance a pragmatic first version with a sustainable architecture.

Agile way of working with fixed delivery moments

We work in two-weekly sprints with a clear backlog and sprint demos. Your stakeholders, such as the L&D manager, IT architect and content team, regularly get the chance to give feedback on working software rather than on wireframes. The end product is therefore no surprise but an iteratively built solution that fits real-world practice. After delivery, we offer support contracts for further development and maintenance.

Data sovereignty and GDPR compliance

Learning data, such as who has completed what, how someone scored, and which questions were answered incorrectly, is sensitive personal data. We build with privacy by design: data is minimised, stored encrypted, and a comprehensive consent and retention policy is built in. Your platform runs on European infrastructure (Amsterdam, Frankfurt) unless you explicitly choose otherwise, so there is no doubt about the GDPR compliance of your data processing.

Frequently asked questions about e-learning platforms

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about building a custom e-learning platform.

What is the difference between an e-learning platform and an LMS?
An LMS (Learning Management System) is a specific category of e-learning software focused on managing and distributing course content. An e-learning platform is a broader term that also includes Learning Experience Platforms (LXPs), content libraries, community features and personalised learning paths. What we build is a fully custom web platform that offers precisely the functionality your organisation needs, whether that is closer to a classic LMS or to a modern learner-first platform.
What do SCORM and xAPI support mean in practice?
SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) is a widely used standard for e-learning content that allows course modules to be exchanged between different platforms. xAPI (also known as the Tin Can API) is a more modern standard that can also record learning activities outside the platform, such as simulated tasks, video views or offline learning. By supporting both standards, you can import existing SCORM content and track future content via xAPI.
Can an e-learning platform be offered as white-label?
Yes. White-labelling is a frequently requested feature for training providers and resellers. It means your end clients see the platform under your own branding and domain name, with no visible reference to the underlying technology. We can also implement a multi-tenant architecture, where each client gets its own separate environment with its own branding, users and reporting.
How long does it take to build an e-learning platform?
The lead time depends heavily on the scope. A lean MVP with basic functionality, including course uploads, user management, progress tracking and a simple interface, can be ready within two to three months. A fully equipped platform with SCORM/xAPI, SSO, white-label support, advanced analytics and integrations with HR systems typically takes four to eight months. We work in two-weekly sprints so you can give feedback along the way.
Which integrations are available as standard with an e-learning platform?
Commonly requested integrations include SSO via SAML 2.0 or OAuth2 (Azure AD, Okta, Google Workspace), HR systems such as AFAS, Visma or SAP SuccessFactors for automatic user synchronisation, payment platforms for paid training, video hosting via Vimeo or AWS Elemental, and webhook integrations for notifications in Slack or Teams. We always build on a REST API architecture so your platform can easily connect to future systems.
Is the platform also suitable for large numbers of concurrent users?
Scalability is a core part of our architectural choices. We use horizontal scaling, CDN distribution for media and database optimisations that absorb peak loads. Whether your platform has ten or ten thousand concurrent learners, the architecture scales with it. For larger volumes, we advise on hosting choices and load testing before you go live.
What determines the investment for an e-learning platform?
The main factors are: the number of user roles and their associated permission structures, the desired integrations (SSO, HR systems, payments), the complexity of analytics and reporting, white-label or multi-tenant requirements, and whether SCORM/xAPI parsing is required. We always provide a detailed quotation following an intake conversation so you know exactly where you stand.
