Custom class certificate expiry date software

Appfront builds software for shipping companies, technical managers and yacht owners who need to keep track of their vessels' class: per ship, the class certificates and statutory certificates issued by the classification society on behalf of the flag state, the surveys with their windows, open conditions of class and recommendations with their deadlines, and integration with dry-dock planning. So that a survey doesn't fall outside its window, a condition isn't forgotten, and a ship isn't held up because a certificate has lapsed.

What is software for class certificate expiry dates?

A sea-going vessel is classed with a classification society. That society issues the class certificate and, on behalf of many flag states, carries out statutory surveys. The certificate only remains valid if surveys are carried out on time: annually, intermediate and at renewal, each within a window around the due date. In addition, the society imposes conditions of class with a deadline. Class certificate management software keeps track of this per vessel.

A technical manager with a fleet checks the classification society's portal, keeps a spreadsheet and schedules surveys around port calls and dry-docking periods. With vessels under different classification societies and flags, this becomes a puzzle. A survey that falls outside its window, or a condition that runs past its deadline, can jeopardise the class, and then the vessel may be unable to sail or may lose its insurance.

We build custom solutions because the overview needs to match your fleet: which vessels and classification societies, which flags, which certificates, how you schedule surveys around ports and docks, which planned maintenance system you use, and who is responsible for what. A classification society's portal shows its own vessels; it does not show a fleet spread across several societies, with your own planning alongside.

Surveys within their window

For each vessel, the surveys with their window around the due date, scheduled alongside port calls and dry-docking periods, with an advance notification.

Conditions with an owner

Conditions of class and recommendations with their deadline, an owner and the status of resolution, until the society closes them.

One fleet overview

Vessels under different classification societies and flags in a single overview, showing what is due this month, this quarter and this year.

How we build your software for class certificate expiry dates

We start with the fleet: which vessels, which classification societies and flags, how surveys are currently scheduled, and when things last came close to going wrong.

1
Mapping the fleet and certificates

Your vessels, classification societies, flags and certificates, the way you plan, and the systems for maintenance and documents.

2
Certificates and windows

For each vessel, the certificates, expiry dates and survey windows, transferred from the classification society's data and your records.

3
Conditions and planning

Conditions of class and recommendations with deadline and owner, and surveys scheduled alongside ports and docks.

4
Alerts and integrations

Advance alerts, documents per survey, integration with maintenance and dry-dock planning, and ongoing management.

What class certificate expiry software actually does

The components below come up for nearly every shipping company or technical manager. Which you need depends on your fleet.

Certificates

Class certificates and statutory certificates per vessel, with classification society, flag and expiry date.

Survey windows

Annual, intermediate and renewal surveys with their window, and what needs to happen within it.

Conditions of class

Imposed conditions and recommendations with deadline, owner, actions and evidence of resolution.

Planning

Surveys scheduled alongside port calls, charters and dry-docking periods, so they coincide where possible.

Notifications

An advance notification when a window is approaching or a condition is at risk of passing its deadline.

Fleet overview

Per vessel and for the whole fleet, what is due this month, this quarter and this year.

Who we build class certificate expiry software for

The software is intended for those who monitor the class of multiple vessels.

Shipping companies

A fleet of your own under one or more classification societies. The fleet overview and planning are central.

Technical managers

Vessels owned by different parties. Mixing classification societies and flags is where it matters most.

Yacht owners and managers

Large yachts in class. Surveys timed around the season are what counts.

Offshore and work vessels

Vessels with heavy project deployment. Planning alongside deployment is central.

This page is about class certificates and surveys for sea-going ships and yachts. For inland waterway vessel certificates, see our page on a certificate monitoring app, for the maritime sector our page on maritime software, and for dry-dock scheduling our page on a dry-dock planning app. You can read about our approach at building custom software.

Why Appfront for your class certificate expiry software?

A vessel that loses its class cannot sail. We build around that: surveys carried out within the window, conditions closed out, and a fleet you can oversee at a glance.

No survey outside the window

Windows are fixed per vessel and trigger an advance notification. The schedule takes them into account.

Conditions never overlooked

Every condition has an owner and a deadline, and stays visible until the society closes it.

Surveys scheduled smartly

Where possible, surveys are aligned with port calls and dry-dock periods. That saves cost and downtime.

Security and privacy in class certificate expiry software

The software holds data on vessels, certificates and technical condition, sensitive information for owners and insurers. Access is set by role: the superintendent sees their own vessels, management sees the fleet, and an owner sees only their own vessel.

The software runs in a European data centre, with encrypted storage and daily backups. On board, the overview can be viewed even without a connection.

Frequently asked questions about class certificate expiry software

Questions shipping companies and technical managers ask before getting started.

It keeps track of class certificates and statutory certificates per vessel, including survey windows, open conditions of class and recommendations. It schedules surveys alongside port calls and dry-dock periods, and gives advance notice of what is coming up.

A period around the expiry date in which a survey must be carried out to keep the certificate valid. Which windows apply to your vessels follows from the rules of the classification society.

Yes. Vessels under different societies and flags sit in one overview. The data comes from your administration and, where possible, from the data the society supplies.

That covers certificates for inland vessels and their crew. This software covers class and surveys for sea-going vessels and yachts with a classification society.

Yes. Surveys are scheduled alongside port calls and dry-dock periods, so they coincide wherever possible. An integration with dry-dock planning does this automatically.

No. The portal remains the source for status with the society. This software gives you an overview of the whole fleet, with your own planning and responsibilities.

Check that first. Many planned maintenance systems have a certificates module, and that is enough if your fleet is simple. Custom development makes sense with several classification societies and flags, with scheduling around ports and dry docks, or if conditions need their own follow-up.
