Custom energy cooperative software
Appfront builds custom software for energy cooperatives: member administration, shares in a production installation, processing of generation and feed-in, and settlement with members. Tailored to the Subsidieregeling Coöperatieve Energieopwekking (SCE, the Cooperative Energy Generation Subsidy Scheme), the EAN meter data of your members, and the way your cooperative distributes its returns. For cooperatives that manage solar or wind production collectively and want to keep their members well informed.
What is energy cooperative software?
Energy cooperative software supports the entire process of a local energy cooperative: managing members and their participation (certificates or shares in a production installation), importing generation data per installation, and distributing and settling the returns among members. Many cooperatives start with spreadsheets, but these become unmanageable as membership grows or once you have to deal with subscription management and annual statements.
Regulations determine how you can organise the returns. Under the Subsidieregeling Coöperatieve Energieopwekking (SCE), the successor to the postcode rose scheme, the cooperative receives a subsidy for each kWh generated by a designated production installation. In addition, the net metering scheme applies to members with solar panels behind their own meter. Custom software models exactly the structure your cooperative chooses, rather than forcing you into a standard package.
Because it involves members, their supply addresses (EAN codes) and financial settlements, we build with a clear data structure and authorisation model. Also read about our wider energy app development and custom software.
A single member administration
Members, their certificates or shares, supply addresses and communication preferences in one system. When members join or leave, the share register stays accurate, with no separate member lists drifting out of sync.
Generation and distribution
Generation data per production installation is imported and allocated to members in proportion to their participation. You define the distribution key as your general meeting has approved it.
Settlement and accountability
For each member you can see the kWh generated, the corresponding SCE return and the annual statement. This makes the distribution traceable for members, the board and the auditor.
How we build your energy cooperative software
We work step by step and involve your board and treasurer early on, from an initial assessment of your scheme and distribution key through to go-live and ongoing management.
We map out how your cooperative is set up: SCE or net metering, the distribution key, the share register and the meter data you receive. Together we determine which components matter most.
We design the data structure, screens and integrations your energy cooperative needs, and check them against how you work before we build.
We build in short iterations with automated tests and interim demos, so you steer priorities and the software fits day-to-day practice.
Controlled go-live with data migration and a safety net, followed by ongoing management, monitoring and further development.
What energy cooperative software actually does
We tailor every application to your articles of association, your distribution key and the installations your cooperative manages. These are the features we most often deliver.
Member and share register
Registration of members, their participation (participations or certificates), supply address with EAN code and payment details, with a complete mutation register for joiners and leavers.
Generation monitoring
Import of production data from your solar or wind installation, via inverter portals or metering services, so that generation per installation and per period is clearly visible.
SCE administration
Recording of the subsidy decision, the designated installation and the kWh generated that form the basis for the SCE return, with the data you need for accountability.
Distribution and settlement
Allocation of returns to members according to your distribution key, with draft and final annual statements that you can check before they are issued.
Invoicing and direct debit
Integration with invoicing and direct debit for member contributions or payouts, with SEPA mandates and a clear payment status per member.
Member portal
A private portal where members can view their participation, generation and settlement. It saves your volunteers a lot of questions and keeps members engaged.
Who we build energy cooperative software for
Energy cooperatives differ in size and in what they manage collectively. For each of these we build software that suits the structure and the volunteers who use it.
Local generation cooperatives
Cooperatives with a collective solar roof or wind turbine that generate under the SCE and share the proceeds among members. The software keeps shares, generation and distribution together.
Postcode Rose projects
Projects still operating under the former Postcode Rose scheme, with settlement via energy tax. We support the existing scheme alongside new SCE projects. See also AI for energy and utilities.
Energy communities
Cooperatives that share energy between members and need meter data and allocation per quarter-hour or per month, in line with developments around energy communities in the Energy Act.
Neighbourhood and village initiatives
Smaller initiatives that work with volunteers and mainly need simple membership administration, with a clear member portal and annual settlement.
Test your idea first: a working prototype in 1 day
With OneDayBuild, we turn your idea into something tangible in one day for €1,150, so you can see whether further development is worth the investment. Decide to go ahead with the full build? Then we credit the full cost.

We build on a modern, maintainable web stack and connect to the metering and payment services your cooperative uses. We pull metering data from inverter portals or a metering service, and for settlement we connect to invoicing and SEPA direct debit.
Why choose Appfront for your energy cooperative software?
Appfront builds custom software and begins with a thorough analysis of your articles of association, allocation key and the scheme under which you generate. Software for a cooperative has to be right for the board, the treasurer and the auditor, and remain understandable for volunteers.
We build a clear data structure and write documentation so your cooperative can keep managing the software, even when the board changes. No black box, just transparent agreements on data, authorisation and settlement.
You work with a fixed point of contact who understands both the technology and your industry. That keeps communication short and speeds up decisions when choices need to be made during the build.

Security and privacy in energy cooperative software
An energy cooperative processes members' personal data, their consumption addresses and payment details. We build privacy by design: only the data needed for participation and settlement, with a documented legal basis and role-based access, so a volunteer does not automatically see all financial data.
We protect payment details and SEPA mandates with encryption in transit and at rest, and every access and change is logged. More about our approach: our information security policy and responsible disclosure policy. Discuss your situation via our contact form.
- GDPR-compliant data processing and data minimisation
- Role-based access and least-privilege principles
- Encryption in transit (TLS 1.2+) and at rest
- Complete audit logging of access and changes
- Daily back-ups with tested restores
- Built to the OWASP security standards
- Clear documentation of data flows and authorisations

Frequently asked questions about energy cooperative software
Answers to the questions we are asked most often about custom software for energy cooperatives.
Energy cooperative software supports membership administration, the share or certificate register, importing generation data, and the allocation and settlement of proceeds among members. Custom software aligns with the scheme under which you generate and with your own allocation key, rather than forcing you into a standard package.
Yes. The Cooperative Renewable Energy Generation Subsidy Scheme (SCE, Subsidieregeling Coöperatieve Energieopwekking) succeeds the postcode roos scheme and pays the cooperative a subsidy per kWh generated by an eligible installation. The software records the subsidy decision, the installation and the kWh generated, and uses these as the basis for distribution and reporting. We also support existing postcode roos projects.
In most cases, yes. We connect to the inverter manufacturers' portals or to a metering service, so production per installation comes in automatically. Where an integration isn't available, generation can be entered or imported periodically.
Yes. Based on generation and your allocation key, the software produces draft and final annual settlements per member. For contributions or payouts we connect to invoicing and SEPA direct debit, with a clear payment status per member.
We build custom software. Cooperatives differ in their articles of association, distribution key, the scheme under which they generate energy and the extent to which they work with volunteers. Custom software fits your actual set-up and grows with you when your cooperative or the regulations change.
Yes. We build a private member portal where members can view their participation, generation and settlement. This reduces the number of questions your volunteers receive and keeps members engaged with the project.
Yes. We regularly take over existing applications or spreadsheets. We assess the setup, migrate the data carefully and build on that foundation, or modernise step by step towards a maintainable situation.
