Custom business app development
The hardest question for a business app is rarely what it looks like, but how it gets onto your people's phones and stays managed there. Appfront builds custom apps for employees and fixed business relationships, and sets up rollout through the channels designed for that purpose: Apple Business Manager, Managed Google Play and your own device management.
What is a business app?
A business app is an application built for a defined group of users: your own employees, your field staff, or fixed business relationships you know by name. Its defining characteristic is not its functionality but its distribution. There is no public audience in the App Store to convince; there is a list of people who need the app, and that list changes with every joiner and leaver.
That property shapes almost every technical decision. Before you think about screens, you need to answer three things: will it be a native app or a web app, how does it get onto the device, and how does the user log in without an extra password. Those who only ask these questions at the end discover too late that the app cannot be rolled out as intended.
This page covers those three questions. If you're looking for an app for external business customers and partners, building a B2B app is the better starting point. If you want employees to use it mainly through a browser, see building an employee portal or the intranet web app.
Native or web app, explained
The choice depends on hard requirements: if you need camera access, background location, offline working or push notifications, native wins. If it concerns forms and overviews on a laptop and phone, a web app is quicker to roll out and maintain.
Private rollout, not public
A business app does not have to be listed in the public app store. Through Apple Business Manager you can make a custom app available exclusively to your own organisation, and Managed Google Play does the same on Android.
Signing in with the account you already have
Users sign in with their existing work account via single sign-on. That saves a password, and when someone leaves, their access to the app disappears the moment their account is blocked.
How we build your business app
We start with the user group and the rollout, and work back from there to the functionality. That avoids the classic situation in which a finished app sits unused because nobody considered how it would get onto the devices.
We determine who will use the app, on which devices, and whether those are company-owned or personal phones. We also check whether you already use device management and an identity provider, as that determines the rollout route.
We choose between native and web app based on the technical requirements, design the authorisation model per role, and define how accounts are created and revoked. We also establish which data may be stored on the device.
We build in short iterations with test builds your people can genuinely install, for example via TestFlight or a test channel in your management environment. That way, feedback comes from real use rather than a demo.
Publication in your private channel, integration with your device management, and ongoing management afterwards: new versions, monitoring and changes as your organisation or the platform rules evolve.
What's involved in a business app
Beyond the functionality your process requires, these are the components that come up in almost every business app and that make the difference between an app that keeps running and one that quietly stops working after six months.
Private distribution on iOS
Through Apple Business Manager, you submit a custom app to App Store Connect and assign it to your own organisation. The app is then visible only to your people, with no public listing and no public reviews.
Private distribution on Android
On Android, you publish the app as a private app in Managed Google Play, available to the organisations you designate. Within Android Enterprise, the app is then deployed to the devices as a managed application.
Rollout via device management
If you use Microsoft Intune, Jamf Pro, or another MDM solution, the app is automatically installed and updated on the devices enrolled there. New employees get it without anyone needing to send instructions.
Single sign-on with your identity provider
The app authenticates against your existing identity provider via OpenID Connect or SAML. On iOS and macOS, this can be done through the Enterprise SSO app extension, so someone already signed in to another work app doesn't need to log in again.
Roles and access that keep up with changes
Authorisation follows the role from your HR or identity system rather than a separate list inside the app. If someone changes position or leaves the company, their access changes accordingly without manual action.
Version control and retirement
A business app lives for years, and in the meantime the platforms change. We set up version control so outdated versions are blocked cleanly with a clear message, rather than silently failing on a changed API.
Who we build business apps for
A business app makes sense as soon as the work happens on a phone and a browser falls short. These are the situations we encounter most often.
Field service and on-site work
Technicians, inspectors, and drivers who record, photograph, and sign off on site, often in places with poor coverage. Camera, location, and offline working are hard requirements here, which pushes the choice towards native.
Manufacturing, warehousing, and logistics
Staff who scan, count, and book stock on the floor, usually on centrally managed company devices. Rollout here almost always runs through device management, with the app deployed as a managed application.
Office-based organisations
Organisations that want to make leave requests, expense claims, rosters or internal requests available on the phone. Where there are no hard native requirements, a web app is often the wiser choice; see building an intranet web app and building an employee portal.
SMEs with their own process
Businesses whose workflow doesn't fit a standard package and who want an app that supports that process. See also building custom software for SMEs and the pitfalls we describe in developing an internal business app.

We build native apps in Swift for iOS and Kotlin for Android, or cross-platform with Flutter or React Native if both platforms need the same functionality. We build a web app as a progressive web app, which can be added to the home screen straight from the browser. We make that choice based on your requirements rather than preference: push notifications, background location, camera integration and offline working are the factors that tip the balance.
For rollout, we align with what you already use: Apple Business Manager for custom apps on iOS, Managed Google Play for private apps within Android Enterprise, and Microsoft Intune or Jamf Pro for installation on devices. Authentication runs through your identity provider. More about our approach: building an app and building software.
Why choose Appfront for your business app?
Appfront builds custom apps for iOS, Android and the web that fit your business processes, with smart technology and thoughtful design. For a business app, rollout is an inseparable part of the job. We don't hand over an app that then becomes a management problem; we build distribution, sign-in and version control in from the start.
We also give you honest advice when a native app isn't necessary. For many internal applications, a web app is quicker to roll out, cheaper to maintain and not dependent on the approval processes of two platforms. We weigh that up together, based on your requirements, before anything is built.
The process begins with a no-obligation introductory conversation, followed by planning, development and maintenance, carried out in design and development sprints. You see working versions on real devices along the way, not just on a screen at our office.

Security and privacy for a business app
For a business app, security is mainly about the lifecycle of access. Someone joins, changes role and leaves, and the app needs to follow that without an administrator having to remember it. That's why we tie authorisation to your identity provider rather than to a separate user list within the application itself.
If the app runs on employees' own devices, a second question arises: what may remain on that device. We limit local storage to what is functionally necessary, encrypt whatever is stored, and ensure access can be revoked centrally. If the app processes personal data about employees, such as location or working hours, we document the legal basis and retention period in line with the GDPR.

Frequently asked questions about a business app
Answers to the questions we are asked most often about custom apps for your own staff and regular business relations.
A business app is an application for a defined group of users: your employees, your field staff or your regular business relations. The difference from a consumer app lies not in the functionality but in distribution. There is no public audience to win over, but a list of people who need the app, and that list changes constantly. That determines how the app is rolled out and how access is managed.
Choose native if you need camera integration, background location, reliable push notifications or genuine offline working. Choose a web app if it mainly involves forms, overviews and approvals that are also used on a laptop. A web app is quicker to roll out, has no platform review process and is cheaper to maintain. We make that judgement based on your requirements before anything is built.
No. Through Apple Business Manager you can have a custom app submitted that is assigned exclusively to your own organisation, with no public listing and no public review. On Android you publish the app as a private app in Managed Google Play, available only to the organisations you specify. This keeps the app invisible to anyone outside your company.
If you use device management, such as Microsoft Intune or Jamf Pro, the app is installed and updated automatically on the devices known to it. New employees receive it when their device is set up. If you do not use MDM, the app can be made available through the private channel and people install it themselves with their work account.
Preferably with the work account they already have, via single sign-on with your identity provider over OpenID Connect or SAML. That saves an extra password and means access to the app ends as soon as the account is blocked. On Apple devices, the Enterprise SSO app extension can ensure that someone already signed in to another work app does not have to log in again.
That is possible, but it changes the design. We then limit what is stored locally on the device, encrypt whatever is stored and make sure access can be revoked centrally without reaching into the rest of the device. We also make explicit which data the app does and does not collect, so you can explain that clearly to your employees.
We build custom solutions. A business app is by definition the translation of a process that runs differently in your organisation than elsewhere; if that process fitted a standard package, you would not need the app. Custom development matches your actual way of working, your existing systems and your management environment, and can grow with you as the organisation changes.
Yes. We regularly take over existing applications, even if another party built them. We assess the architecture, integrations, the authorisation model and the way the app is distributed, document the current setup and propose improvements. Distribution and version management are often the first things that need attention.
