Custom intranet development
A central platform where employees find documents, start workflows and collaborate with colleagues, without five separate tools. Appfront builds custom intranets that your organisation uses every day, not just at launch.
Why organisations are building an intranet
Most businesses with more than 30 employees run into the same problem: information is scattered across email, SharePoint folders, Excel files and WhatsApp groups. New colleagues take weeks to find their feet. HR forms circulate as PDFs. And nobody is quite sure whether the document they've opened is the latest version.
Building an intranet solves this by bringing everything together in one secure web application. Not a static page with a welcome message and a phone list, but a working platform where staff carry out tasks daily, manage documents and start processes.
Appfront builds intranets as web applications: not ready-made SharePoint templates, but custom software that fits your processes exactly. We apply the same technologies we use for client portals and B2B platforms to your internal environment: a React or Vue.js frontend, a Node.js or Python backend, and integrations with your existing systems.

An intranet that works has three qualities: it is fast, it is relevant, and it fits the way your organisation actually operates. That sounds simple, but most off-the-shelf solutions fall short on at least one of these points. They are too slow, too generic, or they force employees into a workflow that doesn't match day-to-day practice.
That is why our intranet development at Appfront always starts by mapping out your real processes. Which forms do employees fill in every day? Which documents do they search for most often? Where do approval processes get stuck? Those answers shape the architecture, not a standard template.

Explore OneDayBuild →Core features of a modern intranet
Every intranet we develop includes a set of building blocks that together form a workable environment. The exact mix varies by organisation, but these modules come up most often in intranet development.
Document management and knowledge base
Central storage with version control, search and a permissions structure. Employees find the right document within seconds, even if they don't know which folder it's in. Full-text search covers not only file names but also the contents of documents, presentations and spreadsheets.
Digital forms and approval workflows
Leave requests, expense claims, IT tickets, purchase orders: processes that currently run over email or on paper, we digitise into streamlined workflows. Every step has an owner, a deadline and automatic notifications. The result: fewer emails, faster turnaround times and a complete audit trail.
Employee self-service portal
Employees manage their own details, payslips, holiday days and training requests without having to call HR. This not only saves the HR department time, it also improves employee satisfaction, as people don't have to wait for an answer they could find themselves.
Internal communication and news feed
A news feed with company updates, departmental news and team announcements replaces the weekly email newsletter that nobody reads. Reactions and @mentions make it interactive. Urgent messages can appear as a banner at the top, so they reach employees who use the intranet mainly to look up documents.
Dashboards and reporting
Personal dashboards show each employee the information relevant to their role: open tasks, recent documents, team calendar and KPIs. Managers see aggregated data on departmental performance, sickness absence or project progress in real time, not only after the monthly report.
SSO and role-based access
Integrating with Azure AD, Google Workspace or another identity provider means your staff sign in with a single set of credentials. Role-based access control (RBAC) automatically determines who can see and do what, based on department, job function or location. This removes manual permission management and strengthens security.

Explore OneDayBuild →How we approach intranet development
Intranet development at Appfront follows four phases. Each phase closes with a tangible result that you review before we move on.
1. Analysis and process design
We interview stakeholders across departments — HR, IT, management and end users — and map out the current flow of information. Which processes take up a disproportionate amount of time? Where do things fall through the cracks? The outcome is a functional design with priorities: which modules deliver the most value if they are built first?
2. UX design and prototyping
Based on the functional design, we create wireframes and an interactive prototype. Staff test the prototype in usability sessions — not in a demo we give, but by carrying out tasks themselves. We act on feedback straight away. This prevents us from building a system that looks good but doesn't fit everyday working practice.
3. Development and integration
We build in two-week sprints. Each sprint delivers working functionality that you can test. Integrations with your existing systems — ERP systems such as Exact, HR software, CRM platforms or directory services — are included from the outset, not bolted on afterwards.
4. Launch, training and ongoing development
We roll out the intranet in phases: first a pilot group, then department by department. Each group receives practical training — not a PowerPoint presentation but a hands-on session in which they carry out their own tasks. After launch, we monitor adoption and performance and keep improving based on user feedback.
Technology choices based on your situation. We work with React or Vue.js for the frontend, Node.js or Python for the backend, and PostgreSQL or MongoDB for data storage. Authentication runs through Azure AD, LDAP or Google Workspace. Everything runs in Docker containers for straightforward deployment and scalability. The choice depends on your existing IT landscape, not on our preference.
Integration with your existing systems
An intranet that stands apart from the rest of your IT landscape becomes an information silo — exactly what you set out to solve. That is why systems integration is not an optional module in intranet development but a core part of every project.
We integrate your intranet with:
- ✓ HR systems — automatic synchronisation of staff data, leave administration and organisation charts
- ✓ ERP platforms — Exact Online, SAP or Microsoft Dynamics for financial data and purchasing processes
- ✓ Directory services — Azure AD, LDAP or Google Workspace for SSO and user management
- ✓ Communication tools — Microsoft Teams, Slack or email for notifications and messages
- ✓ Document storage — SharePoint, Google Drive or S3 as a back end for document management
The integration is done via REST APIs or middleware, depending on what your systems support. We build robust synchronisation with error handling and monitoring, so that data remains consistent across systems.

Explore OneDayBuild →Why a custom intranet rather than off-the-shelf software?
SharePoint, Notion or Confluence are fine tools for specific tasks. But as an intranet they fall short as soon as your organisation needs specific workflows, approval processes or integrations that go beyond the standard configuration.
A custom-built intranet adapts to your processes, not the other way around. You decide which modules you need, how the navigation works, what data is visible to whom and what your forms look like. And as your organisation changes, the intranet grows with you, without you being held back by a third party's limitations.
That doesn't automatically make custom software more expensive. The total cost of ownership is often lower than the combination of licence costs, workarounds and lost productivity that comes with standard software that almost fits.
