GVB

Reliable accessibility for a dynamic city

GVB - Traffic control
Web applicationUX DesignDevelopment

Hundreds of roadworks and events in and around Amsterdam every year mean public transport is regularly diverted. With the TVM Online application for GVB, planners can create diversions for metro, tram, bus and ferry in a user-friendly and efficient way.

Amsterdam never stands still, and neither does public transport

Every year, hundreds of roadworks, events and incidents in and around Amsterdam affect public transport. For GVB, this means planners constantly have to draw up diversions for metro, tram, bus and ferry, often under time pressure and with dependencies between multiple lines and modes of transport. There was no central, structured way to record these diversions, coordinate them and make them available in good time to passengers and operational staff.

You have fully delivered on the plan you presented to us, and as far as I'm concerned, you've done even more than that!

Edwin van der Elst, Traffic specialist

From scattered information to a shared work process

Together with GVB, we mapped out the existing way of working: how are diversions currently recorded, who is involved, and where do delays arise in the process? That analysis formed the basis for the design of TVM Online. Not as an imposed system, but as digital support for the work as planners were already doing it, only smarter and more transparent. In close collaboration with the planners, the application was built and refined step by step. Functional feedback from daily practice was translated directly into changes to the interface and logic, so the system matched the reality of the planning process.

An application that understands the complexity of the network

TVM Online is built as a web application that contains the entire GVB network: all lines, stops and connections for metro, tram, bus and ferry. For each disruption, planners can draw a diversion on the map, including the lines involved, adjusted routes, cancelled stops and validity period. The system monitors interdependencies and ensures that information is available unambiguously to downstream systems such as passenger information and operational briefings.

60% faster

With this application, the lead time for drawing up traffic notices is up to 60% shorter.

5x fewer

reduce errors in the traffic notices produced by eliminating the duplicate entry of information.

Our 3-step approach

Research & process

To build a suitable environment, we first had to map out how the team works. So we started with a review of the current tooling and a thorough inventory of the processes.

Design & development

Because of the deadline, we planned the sprints efficiently by keeping design and development very close together. In short cycles, we could evaluate each interim delivery as we went.

Maintenance

The first delivery had a strict deadline. After that, we carried on with new functionality. The application has been maintained for several years now, and a number of further developments have already been rolled out.

Full control in one environment

The web application is designed for desktop, as it is used in the office. In a split screen, you always have a preview of the end result.

Reliable travel information, available faster

The introduction of TVM Online has demonstrably improved the planning process at GVB. The time needed to draw up and validate a diversion has fallen by 60%, because planners no longer work with separate documents and manual coordination. The number of incorrect or incomplete diversions in passenger information has also dropped by 45%, which directly contributes to more reliable travel information for hundreds of thousands of daily users.
