Custom first article inspection software with measurement reports
Appfront builds first-article inspection software for machining and sheet metal companies: the dimensions and tolerances from the drawing as an inspection list, measured values per characteristic with the measuring instrument alongside, a judgement per dimension and a release for the series, and the measurement report in the format your customer requires. So the inspection no longer starts on a notepad and the report no longer has to be retyped.
What is first-article inspection software with a measurement report?
A first-article inspection proves that the first product of a series matches the drawing before the rest is made. Every dimension with a tolerance is a characteristic that must be measured, using a calibrated instrument, and the result is a judgement per characteristic and a release for the series. The software turns the drawing into an inspection list, lets measured values be entered or imported per characteristic, judges them against the tolerance and produces the report from that.
Without such a system, every inspection starts with a blank spreadsheet: the measuring room retypes the characteristics from the drawing, measures, enters the values, colours the cells and makes a PDF. On a repeat order it happens all over again, because the previous spreadsheet cannot be found or the drawing is a revision further on. A customer who demands a measurement report in their own format gets a second round of retyping. And when a dimension is out of tolerance, that is recorded in a cell, not in a process.
We build custom software because inspection is organised differently in every factory: who measures, with which equipment, at what point in the process, and which customers require which report. A coordinate measuring machine delivers a file, a sliding calliper gives a number someone types in, and both belong in the same list. The software connects to your ERP for orders and drawings, to your measuring equipment management for calibration, and to your customers' formats for the report.
Drawing to inspection list
Per drawing and revision, the characteristics with nominal dimension and tolerance, recorded once and reused on a repeat order, with a balloon number per characteristic.
Measuring and judging
Measured values per characteristic, typed in or imported from the coordinate measuring machine, with the measuring instrument and calibration status alongside and a judgement against the tolerance.
Release and report
Release for the series by the authorised employee, deviations with follow-up, and the measurement report per order in the format your customer requires.
How we build your first-article inspection software with a measurement report
We start in your measuring room: which inspections you carry out, with which equipment, and which reports your customers require. The software follows from that.
Which orders get a first article inspection, who measures, which measuring instruments and CMMs are available, how drawings are supplied, and which report formats customers require. We look at the inspections from recent months.
Recording characteristics per drawing and revision, with balloon numbers, nominal dimensions and tolerances, and the inspection list generated from them for each order.
Entering and importing measurement values, the measuring instrument with its calibration status per measurement, the judgement per characteristic, release, and handling of deviations.
The measurement report per customer format, the integration with ERP and measuring equipment management, followed by maintenance and ongoing development.
What first article inspection software with measurement reporting actually does
The components below feature in almost every supplier with first article inspection. Which ones you need depends on your measuring equipment and on your customers' requirements.
Characteristics register
The characteristics per drawing and revision, with balloon number, nominal dimension, tolerance and measuring method, reusable for every repeat order.
Inspection list per order
The order and drawing come from the ERP, and the inspection list is generated from them, showing the status of each measurement and who carried it out.
Measurement values and instruments
Entry per characteristic or import from the measuring machine, recording the instrument used and its calibration status; an expired calibration blocks the measurement.
Judgement and release
Pass or fail per characteristic against the tolerance, and release of the batch by an authorised employee, with signature and timestamp.
Deviations
A characteristic outside tolerance triggers a deviation with cause, decision and follow-up, linked to the order and visible in the report.
Measurement report per customer
The report in the format the customer requires, drawn from the same measurements, as a PDF or file, with revision and signature.
Who we build first article inspection software with measurement reporting for
The software is intended for companies where first article inspection is a fixed part of every order and where producing the report now takes more time than the measurement itself.
Machining companies
Turning and milling work with dozens of characteristics per drawing and measuring machines in the inspection room. The characteristics register and the import of measurement data are the core.
Sheet metal fabricators
Laser, press brake and welding work with fewer characteristics but many orders. Speed from drawing to list and release matters most.
Aerospace and medical suppliers
Customers who require a complete report in a prescribed format. The report per customer format and traceability per measurement are what is needed.
Companies with certification
ISO 9001 or AS9100 with an audit that wants to see the inspections. Recording who, when and with what is the core.

Why Appfront for your first article inspection software with measurement reporting?
A measurement report is evidence. It must be correct, easy to retrieve and take no more time than the measurement itself. That is what we build on.
Read the drawing once
Characteristics are recorded once per revision. Every repeat order starts from the list, not from a blank spreadsheet.
The measuring instrument is part of the picture
Every measurement records which instrument was used and whether that instrument was calibrated. That is what an auditor asks for, and what a spreadsheet never keeps track of.
Measurement report
The customer format is a template over the same data. A second customer with a different format is a second template, not a second round of retyping.
Security and privacy in first-article inspection software with measurement reporting
The software holds customers' drawings and measurement data, often under confidentiality agreements. Access is set up by role and by customer: the measuring room sees the inspection lists, production sees release, and quality sees everything. Drawings are stored encrypted, and every view is logged, so you can show a customer auditor exactly who looked at what.
The software runs in a European data centre, with encrypted storage and daily back-ups. Integrations with ERP, measuring machines and measuring equipment management work with their own keys, which can be revoked per integration.
Frequently asked questions about first-article inspection software with measurement reporting
Questions that suppliers ask before they get started.
It turns the drawing into an inspection list with characteristics and tolerances, lets measured values be entered or imported per characteristic along with the instrument used, gives a verdict for each characteristic, manages the release of the batch, and produces the measurement report in the format the customer asks for. Deviations are followed up.
For each drawing and revision, the measuring room records the characteristics, with balloon number, nominal dimension, tolerance and measuring method. This is one-off work per revision; for a repeat order the list is ready to go. Where drawings are supplied digitally with dimensional information, part of this can be taken over automatically.
Yes, if the machine offers an export file or interface, and most measuring machines do. The measured values are linked to the characteristics and assessed against the tolerance. Manual measurements taken with a calliper or micrometer are typed in, along with the measuring instrument used.
The characteristic is rejected and a deviation is raised: cause, decision, follow-up, linked to the order. The batch cannot be released while the deviation remains open, unless an authorised employee records a concession. That decision is recorded in the report.
Yes. The report is a template over the same measurements; a separate format can be defined for each customer, from a simple measurement report to a detailed form such as some aerospace and medical customers require. A new customer with a new format means a new template.
Yes. Orders and drawings come from the ERP, release is sent back, and the calibration status of measuring instruments comes from your measuring equipment management system or is kept within the software itself. We connect to what you already use; the software does not become a second ERP.
Check that first. Some quality management packages have an inspection module, and that can be enough if there are few characteristics and only one report format. Custom software is worthwhile if retyping drawings and reports eats up your time, if measuring machines and manual measurements need to go into one list, or if clients each demand their own format.
