Custom digital signage (narrowcasting) software development
Appfront builds custom narrowcasting platforms: manage all your screens and media players centrally, schedule content by location and time of day, use templates in your brand identity and display live data such as waiting times, timetables, KPIs and menus. With offline fallback and monitoring that alerts you as soon as a screen goes down. For retail chains, hospitality, healthcare providers, education, offices and municipalities.
What is digital signage (narrowcasting) software?
Digital signage software, often called narrowcasting in the Netherlands, is the platform you use to manage and play content on screens: menu boards, waiting-area screens, information kiosks, rota boards and internal communication screens. It consists of two parts: a management environment where your team creates, schedules and publishes content, and player software that runs on or behind each screen and shows the content. Who may publish what, on which screens and at which times, you define within the platform itself.
Off-the-shelf packages usually charge per screen and constrain you with their templates and integration options. Once you have dozens of locations, want to connect your own source systems or show different content per branch, that becomes restrictive. Custom narrowcasting software matches your organisational structure: locations, regions, roles and brand identity as they exist within your organisation. Read more about our wider approach to custom software development.
This page is about the management and playback platform for your screens. The business data you display comes from your own source systems: rosters and waiting times, for example, from your planning and scheduling software, and customer and sales information from your CRM software. The signage platform retrieves and presents that data, while the source systems remain the authority.
One management environment for all screens
All screens, players and locations in a single overview. You publish content per screen, per branch, per region or nationally, with permissions that determine who manages what. No more USB sticks or individual TV settings at each location.
Content that keeps itself up to date
Live integrations with your source systems ensure that waiting times, timetables, menus and KPIs appear and refresh on screen automatically. Your team plans campaigns and messages, and the data-driven content keeps pace on its own.
Visibility of every screen
Every player reports its status to the management environment: online or offline, what is playing and when it last synchronised. If a screen goes down, you see it centrally and the right person receives an alert.
How we build your digital signage software
We work step by step and involve the people who will work with the screens early in the process: marketing and communications, branch managers and your IT management. From an exploration of your locations, content and source systems through to go-live and ongoing management, every step is aimed at a platform your team can operate independently.
We map out your situation: how many screens and locations, which content, who publishes, which source systems need connecting and what hardware is already in place. Together we determine what the platform must do at minimum and what can follow later.
We design the management environment, the permissions model per location or region, the templates in your brand style and the architecture of the player software, including the approach to offline fallback, synchronisation and monitoring.
We build in short iterations with automated tests and test on the actual screens and players you will be using. You see working versions along the way and help steer priorities, templates and on-site behaviour.
A controlled rollout across your locations, with an approach for each branch and a safety net in case a screen doesn't come online. After that, ongoing management, monitoring and further development as your content and organisation grow.
What digital signage software actually does
We tailor every platform specifically to your locations, content and source systems. Below are the features we most often deliver.
Central screen management
Players register securely with the platform and are grouped by location, region or function: menu board, waiting area, shop window. You see what is playing on each screen, publish to hundreds of screens with a single action and withdraw content just as easily.
Content planning and playlists
You schedule playlists and campaigns by location, time of day and target audience: the breakfast menu in the morning, promotions on the evening shopping day, a different message in the waiting room than at the entrance. A calendar shows what plays where and when, including start and end dates for each message.
Templates and brand style
Fixed templates in your brand style, with fields that staff only need to fill in: title, text, image, price or time. Every message stays on-brand, even when a branch manager posts an announcement themselves, and formatting errors are ruled out.
Live data sources
Integrations with your source systems bring current data to the screen: waiting times and timetables from your scheduling system, sales and customer information from your CRM, and menus and availability from the till or stock system. The template refreshes automatically whenever the source changes.
Offline fallback
Content is cached locally on the player. If the connection drops, the screen keeps playing the last synchronised playlist, and live elements show a neutral fallback instead of outdated figures. Once the connection is restored, the player synchronises automatically.
Monitoring & reporting
A status dashboard shows for each screen whether it is online, what is playing and when it last synchronised, with alerts sent to the right administrator in the event of an outage. Playback logging shows afterwards which message ran where and how often, for example for internal accountability.
Who we build digital signage software for
Narrowcasting is used in a wide range of environments, each with its own content, source systems and management structure. For each of these we build a suitable platform.
Retail chains
Retail chains with dozens to hundreds of branches: shop-window screens, promotional communications and price messages managed centrally, with room for local customisation per store within the framework of the chain.
Hospitality
Menu boards and promotional screens that adapt to time of day, range and availability. You manage prices and dishes in one place, across multiple outlets, without separate presentations for each branch.
Healthcare providers
Waiting-room screens with live waiting times and calls, wayfinding and visitor information. Data minimisation is the starting point, so no unnecessary personal data appears on public screens.
Education
Timetable boards, room changes and announcements on screens throughout the building, fed from the timetabling system. Students and lecturers see immediately what is changing that day, without administrative staff having to publish anything.
Offices and internal communication
Screens in lobbies, canteens and with teams that display news, KPI dashboards and safety or welcome messages. HR and communications publish content themselves, while dashboards stay live by running alongside the systems behind them.
Municipalities and public spaces
Information kiosks and screens in city offices, libraries and sports halls: opening hours, counter waiting times, events and resident information, managed by several departments each with their own permissions.

We build the management environment on a modern, maintainable web stack, and the player software tailored to the hardware you choose: Android media players, mini PCs or web-based players on smart displays. We connect source systems via REST APIs, webhooks or scheduled imports, depending on what the source can handle. That way your screens show live data from scheduling, CRM, point-of-sale or rostering systems, and every device keeps playing if the connection falters.
Why choose Appfront for your digital signage software?
Appfront builds custom software and always starts with a thorough analysis of your organisation: how your locations are structured, who is responsible for content, and which systems supply the data that needs to appear on the screens. A narrowcasting platform succeeds or fails on details like these, not on the number of features in a brochure.
You own the software we build. No per-screen licence that grows with every location you open, and no black box: we write clear documentation so your own team, or a future supplier, can understand and manage the platform. We extend integrations, templates and permission structures when your organisation needs them.
You work with a dedicated point of contact who understands both the technology and the day-to-day practice of content management. This keeps communication short and speeds up decisions when choices need to be made during the build.

Security and privacy in digital signage software
Screens in public spaces call for care. A player that connects to the platform must demonstrably be your player, and only authorised users may decide what appears on a screen. We therefore set up secure player registration, role-based access by location or department, and audit logging of every publication and change, so it is always traceable who placed which content on which screen.
If you display data involving individuals, such as call numbers in a waiting area or rosters with names, we apply data minimisation: the screen shows no more than necessary, and the integration with the source system only retrieves the fields the template requires. We process data in line with the GDPR, with encryption in transit and at rest, least-privilege access to source systems and API keys, and separate test and production environments.

Frequently asked questions about digital signage software
Answers to the questions we are asked most often about custom narrowcasting software.
Digital signage software, often called narrowcasting in the Netherlands, is the platform you use to manage and play content on screens: from menu boards and waiting-room displays to information kiosks and internal communication screens. It consists of a management environment where you schedule and publish content, and player software that runs on or behind the screen and displays that content. Custom software lets you set up that management around the way your organisation works, with your own locations, roles, templates and integrations with source systems.
In practice, the terms are used interchangeably. Narrowcasting is the term commonly used in the Netherlands and emphasises reaching a specific audience in a specific place, such as visitors in a waiting room or staff in a canteen. Digital signage is the international term for the same principle: showing content on digital screens that you manage centrally. The software we build covers both, with central management, content scheduling and playback on screens.
Yes, and that is one of the strongest reasons to choose custom software. We connect the platform to your source systems, such as your scheduling system for rosters and waiting times or your CRM for customer and sales information, and display that data live in your templates. Think of current waiting times in a waiting room, timetables in a school, KPI dashboards in an office, or menu boards that reflect stock and availability. The screens stay up to date without anyone having to update content manually.
The player software stores the scheduled content locally on the playback device. If the connection drops, the screen simply carries on playing the most recently fetched playlists and templates. Live data that can no longer be refreshed is handled with a fallback, for example a neutral version of the template without outdated figures. Once the connection is back, the player synchronises automatically and reports its status to the management environment again.
We determine this together based on your situation and existing hardware. Common options are Android media players, mini PCs behind a screen and web-based players on smart displays. Because we build or specifically adapt the player software ourselves, we are not tied to the hardware of a single supplier. If you already have screens in place, we first check whether they can be reused before you invest in new equipment.
We build custom software. Off-the-shelf narrowcasting packages are fine for many organisations, but they fall short once you need specific integrations, your own templates, different roles or a large number of locations. Custom software matches your organisational structure, your brand identity and your source systems, and you own the software outright rather than being tied to a vendor's licensing model. After an intake conversation, we decide together which functionality matters most and the order in which we build it.
Yes. We regularly take over existing applications, even if another party built them. We review the architecture, the player software, integrations and security, document the current setup and propose improvements. From that point we can handle changes, new templates, integrations and monitoring, or modernise step by step towards a maintainable setup.
