Batch and grade Losses and yield Traceability

Custom app for sorting registration in the packing house

Appfront builds apps for packing halls that record what comes in per batch, what comes out per quality grade and what is rejected. From the grower's delivery to the label on the box, with the traceability your buyers and your certification require. On the line, on a screen that works with wet hands.

What is a sorting and packing registration app?

A sorting registration app tracks a batch from the moment the grower delivers it until the box with its label is on the pallet. For each batch it records how much came in, how much came off the sorting line per quality grade, how much was rejected and why, and in which packaging and under which label the product left the hall. That way the yield per grower and per batch is known.

Without an app this information exists, but it is scattered: the weighbridge at intake, the counter on the sorting machine, the labelling system and the settlement with the grower in a spreadsheet. If a buyer complains about a pallet, someone has to piece together those four sources to find out which grower the product came from. In a product recall there is no time for that.

We build custom solutions because every hall has its own line. The sorting machine from one manufacturer produces different data from another's, the grades differ by product and by buyer, and the settlement with growers follows agreements that no off-the-shelf package covers. The app should fit your line, with the equipment you already have.

Batch from grower to label

Intake, sorting, packing and dispatch linked to one batch number, with the grower and the date.

Yield and losses

Per batch and per grower: what came in, what came out per grade, what was rejected and for what reason.

Traceability

For every pallet it is known which batches it contains. For every batch, which grower. One step back, one step forward.

How we build your sorting and packing registration app

We start on the line, with the people who sort and pack, and with the equipment already in place. That shows what the app itself needs to measure and what it can take over from the machines.

1
Mapping the line and equipment

Which scales, sorting machines and label printers are in use, and what data they output. We also look at the grades per product and per buyer, as these determine the structure.

2
Building batch registration

Intake with grower, product and weight, followed by sorting per grade and losses with reasons. On a screen at the line that works with wet hands and gloves.

3
Labels and traceability

The label is generated from the app, carrying the details your buyer requires, and every pallet knows which lots it contains. We test a product recall on paper before the app goes live.

4
Integrating and taking over management

The sorting machine supplies the counts, the scale the weights, and the settlement per grower goes to your accounts department. After that, we take over the app's management.

What a sorting and packing registration app actually does

The components below appear in almost every packing hall. Which ones you need depends on your product and on what your buyers ask for.

Intake per lot

Grower, product, variety, weight and quality on arrival, with a lot number that travels with the produce through the rest of the process.

Sorting by grade

Counts and weight per grade, taken from the sorting machine or entered manually at the line.

Rejects with reason

Rotten, damaged, undersized or overripe. Recorded per lot, so the grower receives a substantiated settlement.

Labels and tags

Case and pallet labels carrying the details your buyer requires, including GS1 codes and the lot number.

Traceability

Per pallet the lots, per lot the grower, per grower the deliveries. Search in both directions within a minute.

Yield per grower

What each grower delivers and how much of it lands in each grade, per week and per season.

Who a sorting and packing registration app is built for

The app is intended for halls where produce from several growers or plots runs over the same line, and where settlement and traceability per lot must be exact.

Grower associations and cooperatives

Produce from dozens of members over one line. Settlement per member depends on the yield per lot, and that has to be beyond dispute.

Fresh produce trade and exporters

You buy in, regrade and pack for retail or export. Buyers ask for origin per pallet and a label with their specifications on every case.

Sorting companies

You sort on behalf of growers and settle on what comes out of each grade. The registration is your invoice.

Ornamental horticulture and bulbs

Sorting by size and quality, packing per buyer, with lots that change from week to week.

Technology and integrations

The app connects to the equipment in your hall and delivers the data your buyers and certification require. If your focus is trade and the logistics behind it, our page on an AGF wholesale app is more relevant. For the growing side there is GlobalG.A.P. crop records, and you can read about our approach at building an app.

For settling with growers based on sorting results, and the reporting that goes with it, there is our software for sorting registration in the packing hall.

Why choose Appfront for your sorting and packing registration app?

A packing hall runs at pace. A registration that slows the line gets bypassed, and then the traceability no longer holds.

Built for the line

Large buttons, wet hands, gloves and noise. We test at the line during a real shift, not in the office.

Your equipment, your grades

The sorting machine you already have and the grades your buyers use. We build around those, rather than imposing a new classification on you.

Product recall in a minute

From pallet to grower and from grower to pallet, without spreadsheets. That is what the registration is for, and we test it before the app goes live.

Security and privacy in a sorting and packing registration app

The registration holds grower and buyer data that is commercially sensitive: yield per grower, price agreements and complaints. Access is governed by role; a grower sees only their own lots if you add a grower portal, and the settlement is visible only to those who prepare it.

Each batch registration is locked once closed. A correction sits alongside the original record, with the name, time and reason. If there is ever a dispute with a grower or a buyer, the full history of the batch can be traced back.

Frequently asked questions about an app for sorting and packing registration

Questions packing houses ask before getting started with this.

It follows a batch from receipt to label: how much came in from which grower, how much came out of sorting per grade, how much was rejected and why, and in which packaging and under which label it left the hall. This gives you yield, grower settlement and traceability per batch.

Usually, yes. Most sorting machines output counts and weight per class per batch, either as a file or through an integration. We look at what is available for each machine and build on that. Where a machine outputs nothing, the line enters the counts on a screen.

Each batch receives a number on arrival that stays with it throughout. When packing, the app records which batches go into which pallet, and the label carries the batch number. In the event of a complaint or product recall, you can trace from pallet back to grower, or from grower to pallet, in either direction.

Yes. Carton and pallet labels are produced by the app with the data the buyer specifies, including GS1 codes and SSCC for pallets. We set up the layout per buyer, so a line operator does not need to know which label belongs to which customer.

From the registration: what each grower delivered and how much of it came out in each grade, priced according to the agreements you have with that grower. The app produces the overview per batch and per period; the prices and agreements come from your own administration.

Yes, the screens on the line work locally and synchronise as soon as the connection is back. In a hall with cold stores and steel structures, that is essential.

It depends on what your buyers require. As soon as a buyer demands traceability per pallet, or you settle with multiple growers, registration is needed, even with one line. With one grower and one buyer, a simpler registration is often sufficient, and we will tell you so.
