Every offcut with size, thickness and location Nesting on what's already there No new sheet for a small part

Custom app for offcut sheet management in sheet metal

Appfront builds apps that help sheet metal companies manage their offcuts: every offcut left over from the laser cutter or press brake is recorded with material, thickness, dimensions, area and a place in the rack, photographed or sketched when stored, searchable by size and material before a new sheet is opened, and linked to nesting so that small parts are scheduled onto an offcut. So the offcut rack is stock rather than a graveyard.

What is an offcut management app in sheet metal fabrication?

Offcut management is keeping track of the sheet material left over after cutting: which remnant, what material and thickness, how big, what shape, and where it is stored. An app registers the remnant the moment it comes off the machine, with a photo or the contour from the nesting, and makes it searchable. Anyone preparing an order searches the offcut stock first; the nesting software receives the available remnants and schedules small parts onto them instead of onto a new sheet.

Without such an app, offcuts sit in a rack, sometimes with a chalk mark showing the thickness, and only the operator who put them away knows what's there. The production planner who needs three small parts in 3 mm stainless steel opens a new sheet because searching takes longer than cutting. After a year there is material nobody can find, until it goes for scrap.

We build custom solutions because the management has to fit your machines and your nesting: which nesting software you use and whether it can import remnants, how your racks are organised, which materials and thicknesses you stock, and how orders are prepared in your business. An ERP knows full sheets by article number, not a remnant with a contour.

Registration at the machine

The operator records the remnant as it comes off the cutter: material and thickness from the order, size or contour, a photo, and its place in the rack, with a label stuck to the sheet.

Searching and reserving

The production planner searches by material, thickness and minimum size, sees the photo and contour, and reserves the remnant for an order. The nesting receives the remnant as an available sheet.

Consumption and value

What is cut from a remnant is deducted; what is left becomes a new remnant or scrap. The app shows what the offcut stock is worth, how old it is and what has been saved.

How we build your offcut management app for sheet metal fabrication

We start at the rack: what is there, what is it worth, and how often in the past month has a new sheet been opened for something that would have fitted on a remnant?

1
Mapping racks and nesting

Which materials and thicknesses you stock, how the racks are organised, which nesting software and ERP you use, how orders are prepared, and what currently happens to remnants.

2
Remnant stock and labels

The first inventory of the rack in the app, with labels for each remnant and the layout of locations. From that point on, every new remnant goes into the rack via the app.

3
Registration and search

Registering at the machine with a photo or contour, searching by size and material, reserving per order, and sending the contour to the nesting software.

4
Integrating and taking over management

Integration with nesting and ERP, consumption and write-off, reporting on offcut stock and savings, then maintenance and expansion to tube and profile offcuts.

What a remnant sheet management app for sheet metal actually does

The components below come up at almost every sheet metal business. Which ones you need depends on your nesting software and on how your racks are organised.

Remnant registration

Material, thickness, dimensions or contour, photo and location, entered at the machine on a tablet, with a label for the sheet.

Search by size

Search by material, thickness and minimum rectangle or area, with photo and contour in the results and the location in the rack.

Reservation per order

Assign a remnant to an order so it is not planned twice, with release when the order changes.

Nesting integration

Available remnants with their contour sent to the nesting software, and the result returned: which part goes on which remnant, and what is left over.

Location management

Racks, bays and locations with their contents, a count per period, and an alert for remnants that need to be moved or scrapped.

Reporting

Remnant stock in square metres and value per material, age, consumption from remnants compared with new sheet, and monthly savings.

Who we build a remnant sheet management app for sheet metal

The app is intended for businesses where sheet material is a major cost and where remnants currently disappear from view as soon as they go into the rack.

Laser cutting businesses

Many materials and thicknesses, orders with small quantities. Searching by size and integration with nesting are at the core.

Sheet metal manufacturers with in-house production

Fixed products with recurring small parts. Reservation per order and consumption from remnants matter most.

Construction companies

Thick plates in S235 and S355 with large remnants that are worth a lot. Location management and the value of the remnant stock are what matter.

Stainless steel and aluminium businesses

Expensive materials where a remnant of half a sheet represents a significant amount. Registration with a photo and the age report are the core.

This page is about offcut sheets. For the business as a whole, see our page on metal fabrication software; for the production planning that nesting feeds into, see our page on production planning software; and for structural steelwork, our page on steel construction software. If you saw sheet material such as chipboard and MDF on a panel saw, there is our app for sheet material cut optimisation.

Why choose Appfront for your sheet metal remnant management app?

A remnant is only stock if someone can find it. That is what we build on: registering at the machine, searching before opening a new sheet, and planning around what is on the rack.

Registering costs less than searching

One photo and a label at the machine. After that, the rest is findable by size and material, for everyone, not just for whoever set it aside.

The nesting knows the rack

Available offcuts are included as sheets. Small parts land on an offcut, not on a new sheet that then produces another offcut.

The saving is visible

Usage from offcuts against new sheets, per month and per material. The rack becomes a line on the balance sheet, not a question mark.

Security and privacy for an offcut management app in sheet metal fabrication

The app works with material prices, order data and your company's stock. Access is set up by role: the operator registers and searches, the production planner reserves and schedules, and management sees the value and the reporting. Every registration, reservation and write-off is logged with name and time.

The app runs in a European data centre, with encrypted storage and daily backups. Integrations with the nesting software and ERP use their own keys, which can be revoked per integration.

Frequently asked questions about an offcut management app in sheet metal fabrication

Questions sheet metal companies ask before getting started.

It registers every offcut at the machine with material, thickness, size or contour, photo and location, makes the offcut stock searchable by size and material, lets offcuts be reserved for an order and passes them to the nesting software, so that small parts are scheduled onto an offcut. Usage, value and savings appear in the reporting.

From the nesting, if your software exports the offcut contour, or from a photo with the dimensions of the bounding rectangle. For searching, the rectangle and thickness are usually sufficient; for nesting onto an irregular offcut the contour is needed, and the integration with the nesting software provides it.

With the common packages via import and export of offcut contours and nesting results; which package you use determines how automated that will be. In the first step we look at what your nesting can do and where the integration will deliver the most value.

With age and a minimum size: offcuts smaller than anything you ever use are flagged as scrap on registration, and offcuts that have not been used after an adjustable period go on a list to be moved or disposed of. That way the rack stays filled with what you actually use.

Yes. Tubes, profiles and bar have a length rather than an area, and the app registers them by profile, material and remaining length, with the same registration at the machine and the same search.

Yes. Materials, thicknesses and prices come from the item file, orders from the ERP, and usage from offcuts flows back into the post-calculation. We connect to what you already use; the app does not become a second stock administration for full sheets.

Ask that first. Some nesting packages have an offcut database, and that is enough if all offcuts pass through that one machine. Custom development makes sense when offcuts come from several machines, when the operator needs to search and register on the shop floor, when locations and labels are involved, or when you want to know the value of the rack.

Every offcut findable, and no new sheet for a small part?

Tell us which nesting software you use, how many materials and thicknesses you process and what you think is currently in the rack. We will show you what registration, searching and integration with nesting look like.
