Custom iOS app development
An iOS app puts your product or service in front of the most valuable mobile ecosystem in the Netherlands. iPhones and iPads dominate the premium market segment: users who spend above average, stay active in apps for longer and show higher retention. Appfront builds iOS applications in Swift and SwiftUI, from business tools and customer portals to sector-specific field apps. We work in an agile way, think along on architecture and UX, and guide you from concept to App Store release.
Swift and SwiftUI: the foundation of modern iOS development
With Swift, Apple has built a programming language that combines safety, speed and readability. Where Objective-C was the standard for decades, Swift has taken over as the language in which new iOS apps are written. SwiftUI, the declarative UI framework, speeds up interface development and integrates seamlessly with the Apple ecosystem: iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and macOS share the same codebase for their views.
Why Swift is the preferred choice
Swift combines type safety with expressive syntax. Optionals prevent null pointer crashes, and the protocol-oriented programming model makes components reusable without the complexity of deep inheritance hierarchies. The result: apps that are more stable and produce fewer runtime errors. Swift Concurrency, with async/await and actors, makes writing safe concurrent code considerably easier than the older GCD patterns.
SwiftUI versus UIKit
SwiftUI is ideal for new projects: rapid prototyping, automatic support for dark mode, Dynamic Type and accessibility, and live previews in Xcode. UIKit remains relevant for apps that require fine-grained control over animations and scroll behaviour, or for brownfield projects with existing UIKit code. We choose the right framework for each project, or a hybrid approach using UIHostingController where that makes sense.
Apple ecosystem: an iOS app built in Swift can be extended to iPadOS (multitasking, Apple Pencil), watchOS (complications, health data) and macOS (Catalyst or native SwiftUI) with relatively few changes. That makes Swift investments future-proof for organisations that want to operate broadly within the Apple ecosystem.
Use cases for iOS apps
iOS apps are deployed across a wide range of sectors. The strength of the Apple platform lies in reliable hardware, consistent OS behaviour and a user base willing to pay for quality. Below are the most common applications we build.
Customer portals and self-service
Give your customers their own space on their iPhone: view invoices, track orders, create support tickets. Sign in with Face ID, receive push notifications when statuses change, and enjoy uninterrupted use on the go thanks to offline caching.
Healthcare
iOS offers a rich framework for health apps through HealthKit and CareKit, from patient monitoring and medication reminders to telehealth integrations. Apple's strict privacy policy makes iOS particularly well suited to apps that handle medical data.
Field service and logistics
Engineers, drivers and field staff work more efficiently with an iOS app that optimises routes, manages work orders and captures photo reports. CoreLocation and MapKit provide accurate location functionality without third-party SDKs.
Internal business apps
HR tools, approval workflows, management dashboards. Through Apple Business Manager you can distribute internal apps without App Store publication, with MDM management for device configuration and security policies.
E-commerce and retail
With Apple Pay integration, camera-based barcode scanning and ARKit for product visualisation, iOS offers unique capabilities for shopping and ordering apps. Push notifications for offers and Wallet passes for loyalty programmes help strengthen customer retention.
Education and training
iPads dominate education. Appfront builds learning apps that support Apple Classroom, deliver interactive content and synchronise progress via CloudKit, from corporate training to educational publishers.
iOS and Android at once: cross-platform as an alternative
Not every project justifies two entirely separate codebases. When your audience spans iOS and Android and the app does not require deep platform-specific functionality, a cross-platform framework can be a more efficient route. With Flutter or React Native, we build a single codebase that runs on both platforms.
When to choose native iOS
Choose native Swift when the app relies heavily on Apple-specific APIs: HealthKit, ARKit, CoreML, Siri Shortcuts, Apple Watch complications or advanced camera functionality. Native development also offers a noticeable advantage where maximum performance is essential, such as real-time audio or video processing, gaming or complex animations.
When cross-platform is sufficient
For CRUD apps, portals, form-driven workflows and content apps, cross-platform delivers a comparable user experience at lower development cost. Flutter's Cupertino widgets closely replicate iOS design patterns, while React Native uses the platform's own native UI components. Both options can be extended with native modules where needed.
We advise based on your specific requirements, audience and budget. Choosing between native and cross-platform is not an ideological debate but an architectural decision that we justify on a per-project basis. Read more in our guide: iOS first or Android first?
From idea to App Store: our iOS development process
Appfront works in two-week sprints. Each sprint delivers working, tested functionality that you can review and steer. No months-long black box: you see progress, give feedback and adjust course where needed.
Discovery and scoping
Collaborative sessions to map out your audience, core functionality and technical requirements. We define the MVP scope, prioritise features and produce a set of wireframes.
UX design and prototyping
Interactive prototypes in Figma following Apple's Human Interface Guidelines. We design for iPhone and iPad, including dark mode, Dynamic Type and accessibility. You test the prototype before we write any code.
Agile development
Sprint-based building in Swift/SwiftUI, with a demo of working features every two weeks. CI/CD via Xcode Cloud or Fastlane provides automated builds and tests. TestFlight distributions for internal and external beta testers.
App Store publication and aftercare
We handle the full App Store submission: screenshots, descriptions, metadata and the review process with Apple. After launch, we monitor crash reports via Xcode Organizer and advise on updates and new iOS versions.
Test your idea first: a working prototype in 1 day
With OneDayBuild, we turn your idea into something tangible in one day for €1,150, so you can see whether further development is worth the investment. Decide to go ahead with the full build? Then we credit the full cost.

Development and DevOps
For backend integrations, we work with RESTful APIs and GraphQL. Data storage can be local (CoreData, SwiftData, Realm), in the cloud (CloudKit, Firebase) or via your existing backend system. We advise on the right architecture (MVVM, Clean Architecture, The Composable Architecture) based on project complexity and team size.
Why choose Appfront for your iOS app
One point of contact
From UX design and Swift development to backend integration and App Store publication, everything sits within one team. No loose freelancers who don't communicate with each other, but an integrated development team that oversees the entire process.
Transparent way of working
You get access to our project environment, can see progress each sprint and steer along the way. No surprises at handover. Every two weeks, a working build is available on TestFlight that you can test yourself on your own device.
Practical advice
We give you honest advice on choosing between native iOS, Android or cross-platform. If a web app or PWA better suits your use case, we'll tell you so. Technology is a means, not an end; we choose the route that delivers the most value for your organisation.
After handover: iOS versions are released yearly with new APIs and deprecations. We offer maintenance contracts that keep your app compatible with new iOS releases, Apple's review guidelines and changes in privacy policy. This helps you prevent your app from being removed from the App Store due to non-compliance.
Security and privacy for iOS applications
Apple sets strict requirements for apps on the App Store. We build on these as standard and add extra security layers relevant to business applications.
Data protection
Sensitive data is stored encrypted in the iOS Keychain. Network traffic runs over TLS 1.3 with certificate pinning where needed. App Transport Security is enabled by default, so no unencrypted connections are allowed. Biometric authentication via Face ID and Touch ID is used for sensitive actions.
Compliance and privacy
Every iOS app requires a Privacy Nutrition Label on the App Store and an App Tracking Transparency prompt. We help you configure these privacy declarations correctly. For apps operating in the EU, we ensure GDPR compliance in data storage, consent management and the right to erasure. MDM compatibility is taken into account for enterprise distribution.
Frequently asked questions about building an iOS app
The main cost factors are the number of screens and user flows, the complexity of backend integrations, whether Apple-specific APIs (HealthKit, ARKit, Apple Pay) are needed, and the desired level of UX design. An MVP with core functionality costs considerably less than a fully developed app with offline sync, real-time features and a watchOS extension.
That depends on your target audience and requirements. If your users are predominantly on iOS or you need platform-specific features, a native iOS app is the right choice. If you're targeting both platforms and the app isn't functionally too complex, a cross-platform approach with Flutter or React Native can be more efficient. We advise based on your specific situation.
An MVP with three to five core screens can be built in a few sprints. More complex applications with multiple integrations, offline functionality and extensive UX design require more sprints. We deliver working builds every two weeks via TestFlight, so you can test early and steer as we go.
Yes. We help create or configure your Apple Developer account, prepare the App Store listing (screenshots, descriptions, keywords) and guide you through the review process. If Apple rejects a submission, we resolve the issues and resubmit.
With SwiftUI, much of the UI code can be shared between iPhone and iPad. iPad-specific adaptations (split view, multitasking, Pencil support) require additional work. Apple Watch extensions built with watchOS are a separate development track, but they can share the Swift codebase for business logic. We estimate the additional investment for each platform.
Apple releases a new iOS version every year and regularly deprecates older APIs. We monitor the WWDC announcements and test your app against the beta versions. With a maintenance contract, we ensure your app stays compatible, takes advantage of new features where relevant, and complies with Apple's updated App Store guidelines.
Apple requires a Privacy Nutrition Label and implementation of App Tracking Transparency. In addition, the GDPR applies to users in the EU. We implement privacy by design as standard: minimal data collection, encrypted storage, consent management and the ability for users to have their data deleted. For medical apps, additional rules apply, which we build into the design.
