What exactly is Tuya, and why do you hear about it everywhere?
Tuya Smart is a Chinese IoT platform based in Hangzhou that specialises in white-label smart home. They supply WiFi, BLE, Zigbee and Thread modules that manufacturers build into bulbs, plugs, thermostats, locks and security devices. The hardware runs on the Tuya Cloud, and end users control everything through the Tuya Smart app or an OEM version of it. Dozens of brands you see in shops — from budget retailers to premium labels — use Tuya under the hood, often without the end user realising.
What does a Tuya OEM app actually involve?
Tuya gives OEM partners an SDK and cloud settings that let the standard Tuya Smart app be transformed into a branded app of your own. You get your own logo, colours, onboarding copy, push notifications and App Store listing, but the underlying device management stays within the Tuya framework. We handle the configuration, the App Store and Play Store submissions under your developer account, and the branding changes that Tuya's OEM system allows. It's important to know that you operate within the limits of what Tuya's framework permits. Deeply divergent flows, or features unrelated to device control (such as a service portal or community feed), are not, or barely, achievable within an OEM app. For that kind of extension, a standalone app that uses Tuya as one of several sources is the better choice.
What alternatives are there to Tuya as a platform?
For those who want control or EU sovereignty, the relevant alternatives are Matter and Thread (an open standard supported jointly by Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung), Home Assistant (open source), custom firmware on Espressif ESP32 chips, and your own cloud stacks on AWS IoT Core or Azure IoT Hub. For industrial applications there are also the Z-Wave Alliance and the Zigbee Alliance. Matter is currently the strongest long-term choice for the consumer smart home: it is an open, vendor-neutral standard that is built into most new devices and natively supported by iOS and Android. For industrial IoT (energy, buildings, critical installations), custom ESP32 firmware on AWS IoT or Azure IoT Hub is often the right choice, as it gives you full control over data, certification and lifespan. We can help you weigh these options against each other. Sometimes a hybrid approach (Tuya for breadth, Matter or ESP32 for differentiating products) is the smartest route.
What is the difference between the Tuya Smart app and an OEM app?
The Tuya Smart app is the generic consumer app that Tuya publishes itself on the App Store and Play Store, carrying the Tuya name and logo. End users pair every Tuya-compatible device with it, regardless of manufacturer. An OEM app is functionally the same app, but under your brand: your logo, your colours, your own onboarding flow and your own App Store listing under your developer account. For the brand, the difference between "your customer downloads Tuya Smart" and "your customer downloads your own app" accounts for a large part of the brand experience. Functionally the difference is more limited: both apps control the same devices in the same way, using the same Tuya UI as a base.
What about data sovereignty and Schrems II?
The Tuya Cloud operates from China and the United States. For European users, this means personal data and device telemetry are processed outside the EEA. Since the Schrems II ruling, transferring data to countries without an adequacy decision is legally risky, and Tuya falls into this category. For consumer applications, many brands address this with clear information obligations and supplementary safeguards; for B2B and public-sector contracts, this is generally insufficient. A DPIA should be carried out early in the process; sometimes the outcome is that a custom EU cloud stack is necessary.
What do the Cyber Resilience Act and RED 3.3 mean for Tuya products?
Article 3.3 of the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) sets cybersecurity requirements for radio equipment from 1 August 2025, specifically for WiFi and Bluetooth devices. From 2027 the Cyber Resilience Act applies on top of this, with requirements for secure-by-design, vulnerability management and CE marking for IoT products. Tuya modules themselves meet those standards, but as a manufacturer you remain responsible for the combination of hardware, app and cloud. We help with the gap analysis, the technical documentation and the OTA strategy needed to stay compliant.
Can we move away from Tuya later as we grow?
Yes, and we regularly guide such migrations. The usual route is phased: first make the app independent (a native or cross-platform app that supports other protocols alongside Tuya), then launch new product lines on custom firmware (ESP32 with Matter), and gradually phase out existing Tuya devices or keep supporting them via Matter bridges. It is not a weekend job, but it is a journey of several sprints rather than a complete restart.
What determines the cost of a Tuya project?
The biggest variables are the number of device categories the app needs to support, the depth of the backend integrations (Tuya cloud only, or also CRM, ERP and billing), the degree of branding (Tuya OEM styling or a fully custom skin), the voice platforms you want to support, and the regions and languages. A pure OEM project is fundamentally different in scope from one where Tuya is just one of several sources in your own app. After the first conversation, we give you a reasoned estimate.
Do you also work on voice control and energy AI?
Yes. We integrate Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri Shortcuts through the standard Tuya integrations, or through your own Smart Home Skills if you need more control over the voice flow and the associated intents. For energy AI, we build models that read Tuya devices for anomaly detection (a device suddenly consuming far more), predictive maintenance (filter replacement alerts for ventilation, wear detection in motors) and consumption optimisation (charging on solar surplus, switching on dynamic tariffs). This aligns with our work on
LLM integrations and broader AI solutions.
What about OTA updates and the lifespan of Tuya devices?
Tuya centrally delivers OTA updates for the firmware in all devices. For your customers, this means security patches and feature updates become available automatically, a significant advantage over building your own firmware distribution. The flip side is that you depend on Tuya's update cycle and their support periods per chipset. From 2027, the Cyber Resilience Act makes this a point of attention: as a manufacturer, you remain responsible for secure updates throughout the product's entire lifespan. We help you arrange those agreements properly, both legally and technically, so you aren't caught off guard if Tuya ends support for a module.
