Custom port software for modern port operations
From terminal operating systems to port community platforms: we build the software that helps ports run faster, safer and more sustainably. Real-time visibility over every container, every vessel and every gate movement.
The digital challenge facing Dutch ports
Ports operate at the intersection of physical goods flows and complex information chains. Terminals handle thousands of containers a day, shipping lines expect real-time status updates and regulators demand full traceability. Without integrated software, processes stall on manual handovers, duplicate data entry and delays that build up across the entire logistics chain.
The Dutch port landscape has its own complexity. Rotterdam as Europe's largest port, Amsterdam with growing bulk and cruise activity, and specialised ports such as Moerdijk and Vlissingen each need software suited to their particular terminal operations. On top of that, existing legacy systems often do not communicate with the modern platforms used by shipping lines, freight forwarders and customs.
Terminal Operating Systems
Yard planning, berth allocation and equipment scheduling in one central platform. Real-time optimisation of crane sequencing, container stacking and truck appointments for maximum throughput.
Port Community Systems
Standardised data exchange between all port parties. Pre-arrival notifications, dangerous goods declarations and transport orders in a shared platform that eliminates fragmentation.
Vessel Traffic Management
AIS integration, vessel movement tracking and berth window management. Automatic ETA calculations based on tides, traffic congestion and port authority rules for safe and efficient nautical operations.
Container Tracking & Predictive ETAs
End-to-end visibility of container movements, with machine learning models that predict accurate arrival times. Integration with shipping line APIs, rail networks and inland terminals for proactive chain management.
Technology architecture for port software
Port operations generate enormous volumes of data: sensor data from cranes, GPS positions of straddle carriers, AIS signals from vessels and gate camera footage. Our architecture is designed for this intensity: event-driven, horizontally scalable and with sub-second response times where it matters.
Alongside operations runs the security side, with its own plan, its own levels and its own accountability. How we build that is covered in our ISPS software.
To record the voyage on board, from loading to discharge, there is our app for the voyage report in inland shipping.
If your terminal falls under port security regulations, it needs its own registration: who entered, when rounds were completed and what was observed. See the app for access and patrols at a port facility.

Port software by terminal type
Every terminal has its own unique operational patterns. A container terminal revolves around crane sequencing and yard density, whereas a bulk terminal is driven by conveyor speeds and storage capacity. We build software that fits your specific cargo flow and equipment.
Container Terminals
Yard management with automatic stacking rules, truck appointment systems that minimise waiting times, and crane sequencing algorithms for Ship-to-Shore and RTG cranes. Integration with N4/Tideworks TOS or fully custom.
Bulk & Breakbulk Terminals
Storage management for silos and warehouses, weighbridge integration, and loading and discharge planning based on tides and vessel draught. Sampling workflows and quality recording for agri-bulk and chemicals.
RoRo & Automotive Terminals
Vehicle tracking via RFID and camera recognition, car park optimisation, and damage inspection apps. Pre-delivery inspection (PDI) workflows and VIN-based tracing from import through to dealer handover.
Fishing Harbours & Marinas
Berth management, auction registration and catch reporting integration with the NVWA. Harbour dues administration, fuel recording and maintenance systems for smaller port authorities.
Our approach to port software projects
Building port software requires an understanding of operational reality: 24/7 availability, zero-downtime deployments, and users operating a tablet on the quayside while wearing gloves. Our approach ensures that technical quality goes hand in hand with operational usability.
Operations Deep-dive
We join you on the terminal. We observe shift changes, peak hours and manual workarounds. From these observations we distil the real requirements: not what is written in an RFP, but what operators genuinely need.
Architecture & Integration Design
We design the system architecture, including all interfaces: EDI messages (EDIFACT/BAPLIE), API integrations with Portbase and customs, and hardware integration with cranes, scanners and sensors.
Iterative Build & Validation
Fortnightly sprints with working software on a staging environment. Operators test every iteration on site. Critical paths (vessel arrival, gate-in) are built and validated first.
Go-live & 24/7 Support
Phased rollout per terminal section with fallback scenarios. Monitoring via Grafana and PagerDuty with SLA-bound response times. Post-launch optimisation based on real operational data.
Port ecosystem integrations
Port software never stands alone. Terminals, shipping lines, freight forwarders, customs and hinterland carriers exchange data continuously. We build the integrations that make this chain work seamlessly, from pre-arrival notification to release message.
All integrations support standard formats such as UN/EDIFACT, BAPLIE, COPARN and IFTMIN. Where partners offer REST APIs, we integrate directly; where EDI messages travel over VAN networks, we build message brokers that translate between formats and guarantee the reliability port operations require.
Sustainability and compliance in port software
Ports are under growing pressure to reduce emissions, accelerate the energy transition and comply with tighter cybersecurity requirements. Our software makes these goals measurable and manageable.
Emissions monitoring
Real-time calculation of CO2, NOx and particulate matter per vessel call, terminal operation and hinterland transport. Dashboards for annual environmental reports and EU ETS reporting in line with the MRV Regulation.
Shore Power & Energy
Shore power connection management: availability, connection protocols and consumption tracking. Integration with energy management systems for optimal use of wind and solar power at the terminal.
Modal Shift Optimisation
Algorithms that route containers via inland waterways and rail instead of lorries wherever possible. Reduce road transport share through smart consolidation and barge planning that respects delivery deadlines.
NIS2 Compliance
Ports fall under the NIS2 Directive as critical infrastructure. Our software architecture implements the required measures: incident reporting, supply chain security and continuous risk analysis.
ISPS Security
Access control systems that comply with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code. Personnel and vehicle registration, secured zones and auditable access logs for port authorities.
Customs Automation
Full digitalisation of T1/T2 documents, AGS declarations and NCTS transit. Automated risk assessment for selecting physical inspections and seamless release workflows that cut waiting times.
Frequently asked questions about port software
How much does custom port software cost?
+Port software projects vary greatly in scope. A gate automation module or container tracking dashboard starts at around €40,000. A full custom Terminal Operating System costs between €150,000 and €500,000+, depending on the number of integrations, terminals and users. We work in fixed-price phases so you know the investment per sprint.
How long does TOS development take?
+You can generally expect a first operationally usable version (MVP) of a Terminal Operating System within 4-6 months. Full rollout with all integrations, equipment integrations and optimisation algorithms takes 9 to 18 months. We deliver in phases so the terminal gains value before the overall project is finished.
Can existing legacy software be replaced in phases?
+Yes, phased migration is our recommended approach. We place an integration layer (middleware/API gateway) between your legacy system and the new modules. This lets you switch over per functional area without big-bang risk. Gate, yard and vessel planning can be migrated independently while the old system keeps running in parallel.
How is 24/7 availability guaranteed?
+Port operations never stop, and neither should our software. We deploy on redundant Kubernetes clusters with automatic failover, database replication and zero-downtime rolling updates. Monitoring with SLA-backed alerting ensures issues are detected before operators notice them. Offline-first mobile apps keep working even when the terminal loses network connectivity.
Do you support integration with Portbase?
+We have extensive experience with Portbase integrations. We connect to their Notification Service, Cargo Controller and Hinterland Container Notification (HCN). Messages are processed via their MSH (Message Service Hub), and we support both the XML and REST API interfaces that Portbase offers.
How do you ensure cybersecurity (NIS2)?
+Our architecture is designed with NIS2 requirements as its foundation: network segmentation, encrypted communication (mTLS), role-based access control, supply chain risk assessment and an incident response plan. We carry out penetration tests, implement SIEM logging and support mandatory incident reporting to the NCSC.
